Help a guy out....I'm ordering an 18" Black Hole Weaponry stainless barrel for my AR308 today. It's going to be mostly a bench/target gun, but I don't buy guns I can't lug around. (Practical tactical? Hehe)

I've decided on 18". I'm going back and forth trying to decide whether I should get their LR profile or standard profile. Stiffer is more accurate, so I'm leaning towards the accuracy boost for standard profile is worth more than the weight loss for lightweight. Does that sound right?

I'm new to AR308s, so forgive me. :P

Here are pictures of the profiles. I'm getting an 18" rifle-length gas system, so this profile with 2 inches cut off the end.

In general, the stainless barrel will be stiffer just due to the alloy. Many barrel makers will also oversize the stainless barrels to compensate for poor cold weather ductility, ask if the stainless lightweight is actually the same profile as the chrome-moly barrels.

There are prize winning shooters that shoot pencil thin barrels on any of the typical calibers, it depends on the type of competition if you want a rifle that shoots well at distance from a rest or a rifle you can effectively run and gun with - they are not the same requirements.

The trend in heavier and heavier barrels hasn't always corresponded with significant reductions in group size at a given distance. If this is a practical do all rifle, the lighter profile will be the one you'll be happier with if you need to lug it and all the ammo, tools and other gear over a hill or through a mid-summer desert. A minor reduction in mechanical accuracy from a rest is a very small price to pay. You can regain and even improve upon any minor loss in barrel accuracy in many cases with proper handloads tuned to your rifle.

BHW makes only stainless barrels, so the profile you see is the profile you get.

Thanks, but a rifle length gas system is a must for me.

Why is rifle gas a must have?

I've had rifle gas and mid couldn't tell any difference. I think the blackhole mid barrels are actually a carbine length like dpms 308 barrels but I'm not 100% sure.

If I were getting a barrel right now I'd give serious though to a rainier match.

Interesting. I've always noticed a difference. Oh well, might be a difference in the guns.

I looked at the Rainier Match, but they were out of stock and I liked what I saw about the BHW barrels better. I actually placed my order this afternoon, 1x 18" SS satin-finished rifle gassed LR profile barrel.
