View Full Version : Favorite 5.56 ammo?

My 5.56 AR is in jail until December 6th  and I have no ammo for it yet. I'd like to buy at least 1000 rounds to break it in, but I don't want to noobishly buy dirty/bad ammo for it. I saw the thread on the PMC ammo so that's already on my list as some to check out.

So, my question is, what's your favorite 5.56 ammo and why?

XM193 55 grain Federal, because that is the cartridge developed by Armalite-Colt-.gov and it works in my ARs.

^^^ Agreed as well! I really like XM193 and if you shop around you can get it for a decent price. I like it better than the AE223.

I also like the Federal 193. But, another great option is the PMC X-TAC XP193 55gr. FMJ (they also make a 62 gr. M855 green tip version-- also, excellent). ROKs make good ammo. This is the stuff they issue their guys. IMO, the brass is cleaner and in better shape than anything I've seen out of a Federal box. I keep about 1K of the PMCs and 1K of the Federals.

The best M-193 I have tried had an F at the end! ( M-193 F) I looked it up and it said something about being frozen during the manufacturing process. I like M855 it's not bad besides the Ballistics line up with my BUIS irons and BDC of my Burris AR Prism.

My favorite ammo is PMC. It is AMAZING! It's very cheap (price) but you get a lot for the price you pay. It burns cleaner then most ammo I have run into, and I personally think it is more accurate then brands like Federal and American Eagle.

If you want cheap ammo that runs great, go with PMC

I haven't heard of any civvie sales for it. Maybe we'll get some surplus after the wars are over?

Yeah, I picked up a pile of it for relatively cheap. Good for plinking, but it's not the most accurate round in the world.

Unfortunately that isn't 5.56mm, yes 5.56mm is .223 cal. but it is a differnt round. PMC makes a great 5.56mm but its their xtac line.

I like PMC bronze .223

Yeah, the commercial, non-M193 clone stuff groups better. Very clean burning. Good clean brass too.

I shot some 55gr. Norinco 223 recently and it shoots better than any of the American commercial 223 I've tried. The powder they used burns filthy though. The cases are ugly...been tumbling them for hours trying to clean the tarnish off. Will see how well it works for reloading.

My favorite ammo is something I loaded myself. Black Hills Mk262 is really good stuff also.

Try palmetto, sgammo, maybe cabela's. The green tip rounds are m855 which have a steel penetrator in the core of the bullet. Pretty gnarly stuff shoots through some pretty decent pieces of steel.

Some of the early Norinco was actually corrosive, even though they said it wasn't. An acquaintance ruined a Galil with it. Just make sure....

My FAVORITE 5.56 ammo is SSA 70gr TSX (very pricey though) - http://www.ssarmory.com/556ammunition-70gr-leadfree.aspx

second favorite would be SSA 77gr OTM (still pricey) - http://www.ssarmory.com/556ammunition-2.aspx

But for plinking ammo I just use one of the XM193 clones.

I like whatever is on sale cheap at Wallyworld. The Federal 55gr. FMJ .223 in the 100 round bulk boxes usually goes for around $40/100. It is reasonably accurate, and the brass isn't too bad for reloading. Not match quality, but good enough for most shooting. They also occasionally carry the American Eagle 55gr FMJ for even cheaper. I will also use Wolf if it is priced cheap enough. My guns don't seem to care. If I am planning on target shooting or hunting, I will roll my own. But for plinking and trigger time, I will go with what is cheapest.

Common theme with Prvi, it seems. I have some of it in 38 special and it's absolutely filthy. Always shoots accurately though, good brass and the price is right.

I have gone through many brands of 556 and decided that IMI is my favorite. It is accurate, loaded hot, and cheap. Centurion is a good buy IMO as well. Pmc is clean, but slow and the bullets, at least in the bronze line, don't like to fragment.

I didn't series of objective tests of about 15 different types of. 223/5.56 and. 308/7.62. Prvi match was the best deal in decent quality ammo. It couldn't match Black Hills or HSM match ammo, but it is much less expensive. In. 308 nothing was as good as Federal Match, even my handloads couldn't match the consisten muzzel velocity of the Federal. None of the inexpnsive basic ammo shot particularly well, though some was so bad that it stood out. Some surplus. 5.56 I think it was Prvi, had the widest spread of muzzle velocity I have ever seen, and the groups were 6 times the size of the best ammo that I tested. The cheap Fiocchi stuff was the sootiest ammo I have evr shoot, and it was nearly the least accurate. I had some problems with the Superformance match ammo in both. 223 and. 308, popping primers, and middle of the pack for accuracy or consistent velocity. I think that part of the problem was that the superformance produces too much gas for a normally ser up AR, so the factory recommends an adjustable gas block to turn down the gas and keep the action closed a bit longer. I have since installed the adjustable gas block but I haven't bee able to do a full test yet.

None of the factory match ammo (except for the above mentioned issues with Hornady Superformance match) ever failed to function 100% of the time, it was only differences in accuracy that were seen. In fact, all the ammo tested function perfectly in all the rifles I tried, so it all seems to boild down to precision. Recently there have been some super deals on Federal Match in .308 ($18-$20) and HSM makes some excellent match ammo for about $14 for 20. Black Hills is pretty much top of the heap for. 223/5.56 and the Black Hills will go for about $40 for 50 rounds.

I just figure that I want my rifle shooting as good as it can, up to my ability to tell. 3 moa may be ok for a beginner shooter with iron sights, but if you are using a scope and have some experience it can be frustrating not being able to hit sub moa due to poor ammo.

I have run into that too. One of mine just throws it anywhere in the general direction. A couple of others don't seem to mind it. But that one gun just hates it. And that is with a 1-in-9 twist.
