Gentlemen
...change one thing on the M1 Garand Rifle working on it in the testing with Mr. Garand, what change would you make to this new weapon system. There are two (2) rules that you must go by. One NO DETACHABLE MAG. The second rule is it must remain as a SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE only. Follow those and see what you would come up with.

I'd extend the magaze a la Lee Enfield...maybe up to an even ten rounds.

I think a metal stock liner might be a good idea.

Better stock (with adjustable buttstock and check rest) and a flash hider. Also would increase mag capacity to 10rds as well see if there can be less smaller parts made into one (in other words less parts).

Did you guys know the Garand was originally designed with a 10 round clip? using the .276 cartridge.

Anyway, the changes I would make... with the exception to the removable mag and select fire would be the features the M14 has.

Chamber it in an intermediate, something like 6.8 SPC. .276 maybe?

I'm divided on the whole en-bloc clip or charge it with stripper clips. A stripper-compatible mag design would have made it easier to top off, and would have been more compatible with loading one round at a time, meaning scoped versions are a lot more feasible.

Then again, the en-bloc is lightning fast for reloading an empty rifle.

Stripper clips would probably be more compatible with a 20-round mag, though. :D

That would be the EASY answer since that was the next developmental step:p But hey- those were/are good ideas!!!

Instead of a fixed en-bloc system, I would use a fixed mag fed by stripper clips, put on an integral flash hider, and have the rounds eject to the side for easy scope mounting.

The Garand is really pretty good as is, but this sort of stuff would increase usability a bit.

Gentlemen,
Some great comebacks. I said NO Detachable Mag. I would have setup a 20 round mag that was NOT Detachable but like the Garand's son the M14 loading from a stripper clip. For ready load and toping off you mag.
Thanks again guys some great input.

I'd add a bolt hold open lever which prevented the dang bolt from flying forward and snapping on your thumb the second the clip was in place.

I woulda made the enblocs 10 rounds, add 3/8" to floorplate to accomodate, add the M14 folding buttplate/shoulder hook, and a folding bipod at the lower band. The receiver gets lugged behind the sight base.

Add screw-in National match sight aperture, removable with combo tool only. Gas cylinder always gets the field retrofit straight cut to ensure tight lockup. Add a 2-piece op rod and op rod guide to avoid bends during heavy operation. Top off this beauty with an adjustable gas plug.

Quick change barrel

Flash supressor/muzzle break

Optional SMG pistol grip

Enfield or Nagant style magazine to hold 10-12 rounds

Optional K98 style WW1 20 round trench magazine

A metal frame for the stock's bedding

for a combat rifle?

No "ping!"

Cause you can hear that "ping" on a noisy battlefield, with your ears already ringing after all the shooting.

I can barely hear those clips eject when I'm using hearing protection...

The fully loaded clip is the bolt hold open lever. As long as you are holding down on the clip, the bolt will stay open.

It seems such a natural mod to strip out the lifter and cut a hole in the base plate for a BAR magazine. Was this ever done in the field?

a gas system that allowed the use of commercial ammunition with bullet weights greater that 150 gr (short stroke ?).
