Hi All!

I have recently purchased a Ruger SR9c and can't wait til this 10 day DROS period is over! I shot a rental and fell in love with it, then check here and noticed its highly recommended and an excellent firearm!

Well, seeing that this is my first handgun, I have a few questions, I did some basic searching and haven't found exact answers so if there are other threads/sites please direct me to them!

1.) In transporting a handgun in a car, I know it has to be locked in a container with some sort of locking mechanism. Can I lock my ammo up with it as well? If its locked up can it sit in my front seat(not that I really plan to)? Does the gun have to be completely unloaded while locked up in my car? Also, I have a hatchback, no trunk, I presume that does NOT count as a locked container right? Obviously because I can still grab the gun...

2.) I've seen stickers/cards that state LE DOES NOT have permission to search the containers, how effective is this? What are my rights in regards to not opening it when requested?

3.) Does the 30 days per handgun wait period apply to PPT?

4.) Any recommendations for shooting ranges in the San Jose area?

5.) Any good accessories I should look into with my new SR9c?

Thanks!

Welcome to CalGuns!
Congratulations on your pistol choice, Rugers will serve you well.
1. Ammo can be in the case with the gun in CA. Interstate travel I suggest you follow Fed law and have guns and ammo seperate and out of reach. In CA, the gun in locked case can be on the front seat or anywhere. No ammo in the gun. Your locked handgun container is the locked container in a hatch back, pickup truck or similar vehicle that does not have a locking trunk.

2. Others will have to comment. The tag will help but I believe the e-check overrides the tag.

3. 30 day wait between gun purchases only applies to new guns. Used guns by PPT: as many as you want, whenever you want.

4. Nor Cal guys will have to advise you on this.

5. I would shoot it a bunch first, then decide what you might want such as grip sleeve, night sights, laser / light etc.

Thanks!!! OK one more question, if I have the gun locked in a container, does the ammo need to be locked too?

Welcome aboard!

You will find that most folks don't look in the "new here" area for Qs and so you won't get many answers in this thread. Also, most of your questions really have been asked a lot. Most of the answers are available in the Calguns Foundation Wiki (http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/index.php/Main_Page) (see the link at the top of every page). My quick answers are inline below (and keep in mind IANAL).

1.) In transporting a handgun in a car, I know it has to be locked in a container with some sort of locking mechanism. Can I lock my ammo up with it as well?
Yes.
If its locked up can it sit in my front seat(not that I really plan to)?
Yes.
Does the gun have to be completely unloaded while locked up in my car?
Yes.
Also, I have a hatchback, no trunk, I presume that does NOT count as a locked container right?
Correct.
For all of these, search around for transporting.

2.) I've seen stickers/cards that state LE DOES NOT have permission to search the containers, how effective is this? What are my rights in regards to not opening it when requested?
Many many threads/posts. Search around for permission or search.

3.) Does the 30 days per handgun wait period apply to PPT?
No. See the Wiki, handguns subsection.
