yeah, we used to make these in the Boy Scouts. Use a heavier metal can and it will not get as hot as aluminum. Old-style coffee cans worked best.

btw, if you know how to solder you can fashion handles for the lantern as well.

yup. We also used to make handles by poking two hole in the can and using a loop of heavy wire as a handle.

What kinda oil do you burn in it? Looks pretty easy and fast to make.

I just made one took about 10 minutes. No glue needed on my version. I`m going to the store to buy some lamp oil. I tried some coleman kerocene and it smoked pretty bad. I will post up pics when I get back.

I`m going to build another one and revise the wick size and see if it burns better. The flame on this one was a little bigger than I thought I want to try and control it abit more.

I changed to lamp oil and made a smaller wick and it works very well now. No more smoke or soot.
