View Full Version : St. Patricks Day Panoche Shoot

Santa Cruz Armory
02-24-2007, 11:35 PM
Well, I was thinking...I really enjoyed the last Panoche shoot, how about another.

I have a friend coming from out of town in March and thought it'd be cool to take him out to Panoche for a little shoot. Is anyone else interested?

I think the same place we had it before would be good. We had clear shots out to about 400+ yds and it was a BLAST!!...so what does everyone think? Maybe we can get some of the "regulars" to bring out their toys :D

Directions are on page 3 post #30

I'm keen to attend and potentially camp overnight. Please let me know what I can contribute to the event.

You can contribute yourself, and even better if you can bring an non gun person to convert them. Just be sure to bring something to shoot at, and some type of stand and cardboard to hold your targets as they're out there quite a ways. Cheap cans of soda make great targets, as do bottles of tannerite form Martin at Irvington arms. ( I think they stock tannerite  )

Food wise, I figure for me it's easier to be self sufficient, so I usually pack my own lunch. If guys want to get a BBQ together that's cool to. I just plan on doing more shooting than eating.

As for camping, maybe someone else that has camped there can chime in as I have never camped there.

At any rate, just go out there and have a good time!

Does anyone have the GPS coordinates of the shooting site?

Also what do you recommend for target stands?

Santa Cruz Armory
03-03-2007, 11:13 PM
It's pretty easy to get there.

If your coming from the San Jose area:

Come 101 south to 156 east to Union road in Hollister, go right. Follow Union Rd. to Airline Highway and go right. Follow Airline Hwy to Panoche Rd then go left (there's a little store/ old gas station there) follow Panoche Rd to Little Panoche Rd then turn left, follow that for about 10 or 11 miles and look for the BLM sign on the right.

From I5 Central valley area:

Take I5 (depending where you are north or south) to the Shields Ave exit and go west. Follow that a mile or two and turn onto Little Panoche Rd. (it may turn into Little Panoche Rd)Follow that for approx 15-20 miles (I'm guessing as I did't clock this section) look for the BLM sign on the left.

Once you get to the gate, I hope to be there 9 am waiting. I'll most likely be in a white F250 4x4. I'll wait (or hopefully someone will) for stragglers until 10 am, after that you're on your own, so leave early. once you're inside the park it's a couple miles back.

I'm gonna try and get there early enough to put out signs to the site. The signs will have "CG" on them.

Here's a link to the Google map For Little Panoche Road: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Little+Panoche+Rd.+Hollister,+CA&layer=&ie=UTF8&z=12&ll=36.653271,-120.855103&spn=0.119814,0.179558&om=1

I'm looking forward to the trip, I hope alot of people can make it. If anyone is interested in Tannerite, contact Martin at Irvinton arms, he may carry it. And with some luck, he may be out there. You can order Tannerite from here:http://www.tannerite.com/ I can say from the last trip, this stuff is COOL!

As for stands, I'll be bringing 5 metal stands. (someone ended up with one at the last shoot) I'll try to get 6 more. BRING CARDBOARD about 2'x3' You can use 2x4's to make a stand or use 3' or 4' stakes from a hardware store. Google "target stands" or make something like this: https://secure1.totalink.net/targetbarn/images%5Cproducts%5Ctarget3.jpg The ground is pretty soft, so you could just attach rebar to the legs and stick it into the ground or build a stand like the picture.

If anybody has any questions just PM me, I'll do my best to help out. :)

I think it's a little faster because you can fly down 101 from S.J. When I came back last time, it took me a few minutes over two hours back to Ben Lomond.

It's not a bad drive. When you get past Hollister you're out in the bare nothing! :D

I'm planning on going, as long as I don't get horribly lost.

I'm heading down from Pacifica, so if anybody's on the peninsula along 280 and wants a ride, let me know. I'll bring the Bronco, so I'll have plenty of room, and 4x4 just in case. :D

I'll try and snag a bunch of empty (and rinsed) coolant bottles from work and fill 'em with water before I head down.

I'll see if I can snag any other interesting targets. I have a dented BMW wheel I plan on putting holes in. IIRC, it's a 17", should ring pretty nice.

The 280 route is MUCH faster.

I remember noting that I was passing near/by Panoche on my way to 5 to head to AZ, so I know the general area it's in.

Anybody got coordinates for the area we'll be headed for? I could probably borrow a GPS for that day, if not, I'll get a good lay of the land from Google Earth.

I can extend my carpool pickup/drop off zone into San Jose, since I'll be passing through, if Tweak or anybody else needs a ride.

Here's what I found for coordinates (36.712407038294245, -120.86236596107483) I've never used a GPS so I'm not sure how they work. Does this look right? I took them from the entrance gate on Little Panoche Rd.

I commuted to South city from the Santa cruz area and 85 to 280 was always alot faster for me

Personally, I would take 280 to 85 to 101 to hwy 25, left on Santa Ana, right on Fairview then left on Airline (hwy 25) again, then left on Panoche Rd then left on Little Panoche Rd... Thats just me...:D I just hated 101 out of the city, you can fly on 280.

Hey blfd1, what kind of stand are you using for that gong?

So far all I have is it mounted on a pole. But I was also gonna secure it with four ropes with stakes or something. (something easy to carry out there) The pole is about 6+- feet long and I have it stuck in the ground now about two feet. I think it will be ok but the rope might give it the extra stability.

I have some paper targets and that Kevlar 50 cal stopper.

Figure to be there by 9 with a lunch and a rifle I have yet to shoot.

Alright, I'm loaded and ready. I'll bring my K31 in the off chance I can buy or trade some GP11 off someone. Otherwise, I'll at least get that scope pretty close before I'm outta quarters. Maybe someone'll trade me for a box of 5.56 I don't have a gun for.

Bringing about 300 rounds of 7.62x54R... I think I've only got about 250 or so of 7.62x25, that should go fast. A few empty and rinsed coolant bottles from work, plenty of cardboard, some lumber to stand it up with.

And a BMW wheel. My wife's aunt asked me why I was saving it when I told her what it was, I told her "to shoot it." She asked why. I said "cause I can't shoot an entire BMW."

Lol, nah. The Tannerite was on our side of all the metal, but you can still hear something's doppler go from high to low if you turn the sound up. That video's a lot better than mine. And it was at about 110-115 yards. At least it was a forged wheel, if it'd been cast, it would have shattered even better.

The pic of the kevlar doesn't show where the 7.62x54R went through. It MIGHT be because I hit closer to the edge, but it sure sent a lot of aramid fluff out the back side.

Every year, Panoche Hills is closed to vehicular traffic, usually between April 15 and October 15. As mentioned, this is due to fire concerns.

I also believe it is then opened as cattle pasture for the surrounding ranches.

Wow, great video of that BMW wheel going to pieces blfd1. I heard that part whistle by also. That was my first experince of the tannerite. I gotta get some of that for the next time.

I have lots of pics of but I need to get them scaled down and I'm as good at that as I am at throwing pop cans for Drickel to shoot at with his new shotgun. Fortunately he wasn't shooting fast.
First can I threw went high but landed right in front of us. He said to toss it out there a bit further. So I tossed the next one high enough but it went backwards right over us all and we watched it land in front of my pickup. I thought SNED was gonna whiz in his jeans he was laughing so hard.
I was subsequently relieved of my duties as pop can tosser upper.:D I went and sat down under the shade and had some coffee.

As far as my face in the pics posted I don't mind and its too late for me anyway as I am posted on gunsr4.us. Go ahead and post.

I had my 30.06 sporterized Argentine mauser and Marlin Remington with iron sights but my eyes ain't what they used to be. I was a bit depressed cause I couldn't hit anything. I tried blfd1's gonger way out there about 300 yards but only created dust.

Then moved up to Ricks gongs at about 300 feet and couldn't make them ring out in pain either. It was a bad day for me. And it started out so well too when SNED let me have first shot at the Kevlar with his 50 cal, went right through it, I don't think it even slowed down. Thank you that was great.

My shooting day wound up much better when M.Sage passed me his Marlin 22 semi auto WITH a scope and I hit Ricks gong setup a number of times. Of course I had to go through a few learning exercises with it as I didn't realize it was a semi auto and cocked it after each shot, ejecting a perfectly good cartridge. It was a do over. Thanks M.

But I'm deadly at 100 feet with a 50 cal:cool:

My dumb moment came when I switched to the 30.06 after firing the Marlin lever action .35 Reminton. One of the rounds didn't fire and then wouldn't eject, had to borrow a cleaning rod from SNED s buddy (sorry forgot the name) and it dropped out of the chamber. Turns out I loaded a .35 Rem cartridge into the '06 and it don't work, too small.:o

Say welcome to the new Calguns forum member that was there also. I forgot her name. But she is looking to pick up a rifle or 2 so will be posting some questions about them I'm sure. The 357 SIG she had is represented on the Kevlar target. By the way the Kevlar is 1 1/2 inch thick.

blfd1 were you able to scout out any terrain that is a bit flatter? This was a good area to shoot as it had a 300 plus yard range. BUT the walking up and down those hills to get back and forth was killer.

A nicety to have would be a little motorized wagon or cart to carry the steel up and down the hills. We can't have an ATV out there but maybe a little cart or wagon to lug the stuff around.

I carried that Kevlar downhill 100 feet and dropped it right there. M.Sage helped me carry it back up to the truck.
I forgot the rerod I had holding up my umbrella shade and the 2 pieces for the Kevlar. Hope no one walked into them and got hurt.

I don't know about the 31st for another Panoche for me. Chabot is next weekend and I'm trying to get there. Then following week at Panoche? It makes for an uneasy homefront.
I can however reserve opening at Panoche next October. After many years of opening for fishing, any 'opener' is just understood. October 20th is the first saturday Panoche is open, right?

If you go March 31st, I'll call it a maybe.

I'll work on Panoche pics.

We could try April 14th, would that work better for everyone? I'm open really, I just want to give as much notice to everyone as I can. The more people the better the shoot (in my opinion) :D It gives everyone a chance to meet and check out eachothers toys.

I like the idea of a place that isn't restricted to 100 or 200 yards, that gets boring. Plus out there we can shoot a "multitude" of targets.

Does anyone know if there is another place that we can shoot long range near the bay area?

Ha! I could barely SEE the orange gong you had at the 300+ yard range. I need a bat to hit anything and it probably ought to have a scope on it.
blfd1 you were dinging that gong regularly, seems like just about every shot.

If it wasn't for Sage's .22 Marlin scope I'd be taking up knitting tablecloths.

1000 yards and we better have water stops along the way for us old guys. Maybe a hammock for a nap somewhere near the halfway point?

I do have a barn door I picked up on a recent deconstruction project, about a 10x6 footer.

I'll have to look at Photobucket and see if I can penetrate the easy part. I couldn't access M.Sages stuff he posted.

Thats right, Hi Illiania:D Hope you had a good time out there.

April 14th might be good for me depending on the taxmans greed.

Regarding the little go cart, we might not get away with riding on one but we could walk with it an steer it like a wagon or power buggy.

I was surprised at how long it actually took to setup targets and get things ready before the first shots were fired. I got to the gate at about 9:05, drove the five miles back and setup. First shots from the group were about 11:30 or so.

Bedtime.

I'll try actually being on time next time by not getting lost, I'd be more than happy to help carry targets out long range.

blfd1: Do you have Google Earth? The 3d might make a good way to kind of pre-scout a flatter spot if you want.

Can'thavenuthingood:

Hah, yeah, we noticed the rebar. Nobody walked into it, but it made a fun pistol target. :D

I'll make sure I bring the .22 again next time. Glad you enjoyed it. Anytime we're at the range and you want to use it, just ask. I've still got a couple bricks sitting around here. I was actually thinking the thing had decided it didn't like whatever ammo I'd given you. It was a pleasure meeting you all out at Panoche that day and I look forward to more shooting trips/events in the near future. I apologise for my tardy reply, as I've been on a road trip to Ridgecrest/Death Valley (Ridgecrest has quite a few gunshops considering how large that town is) and attended the Shoot n' Cue at Chabot last Saturday.

Can'tHaveNuthinGood: Thank You for the warm welcome, it was a pleasure meeting you. In re your rifle comment: Yes, I'll be acquiring a few rifles in the immediate future and I have quite a few questions about them. At the next shoot, I'd like to try a variety of rifles to get a sense of what type might appeal to me (I can purchase ammo if someone allows me to shoot their rifle). I'm eager to learn about them if someone wishes to share knowledge on them. In re the Kevlar target: I also had some .357 silver tipped jacketed hollowpoints on hand, but I completely spaced it, hopefully you'll bring out another chunk of Kevlar on the next shoot so we can have a go at it :)

I think M.Sage will bring out his .22 with a scope. Did you get a chance to shoot it at Chabot?

I think the .357 silvertips would have been no better than what you fired into the Kevlar as it seemed to stop all pistol rounds and most rifle rounds quite well.
Would like to see how a .44 Mag would perform on that critter though.

I think sned said he couldn't get out that way until end of April and by then Panoche is closed.

Start a thread and see who all wants to come out. I know a few expressed interest from looking at the pics.

Getting a group together for shooting generally entails last minute gotchas like work, emergency's and lack of ammo and or money. Currently I suspect gasoline prices would put a damper on things along with the taxmans hand reaching for your pocketbook.

Start a thread and ask who'll show up.

If theres an intrest, I could most likely make it.

For me it is kinda a long trip, but I think the shooting is great. Next time I go down I'm going to try and scout a place that would have longer shots, and maybe the ability to drive towards the longer range targets.

I also need to buy a range finder, that's gonna take a few dollars that I have set aside for my other NDS-3 build. On the last trip I was suprised how accurate my Romy build was out to the farthest gong.

Going to Panoche is always a long trip... but after I get there, I'm sure glad I made it. And the shooting is always great!

Hi Boss,

I got an eye problem...I can't see myself coming into work today.:D
Just a heads up, that first weekend after the gates open, them hills will be full of hunters.

Also another side note...People are starting to leave a lot of trash again up there. I know I've picked up at least 20 lbs. or more of brass from there with in the past month. A lot of .223 and .308. So if you go there or anywhere else to shoot or camp please pick up after yourselves.
