i'd suggest you post your question in either the "Ladies Forum" section, or "California handguns" section.

Welcome to Calguns. As noted above you didn't specify handgun or rifle, you also didn't specify caliber or price range.

I will just recommend that you don't overlook something in .22lr. They are usually less expensive to buy and at about $20 for a bulk box of .22lr they are inexpensive to shoot. All the skills you learn with a .22 work with all the other calibers. A 22 is also great to have to introduce new people to shooting, especially those who say they are afraid of guns.

Thank You for all the Welcomes, I like my boyfriends Ruger .40SW and it seemed like a good calibur but he thinks i should try shooting a Revolver maybe a .38 for home protection. Looking for something compact. I tried the Glock 27 and it just didnt fit me. any suggestions on what i should try out at the range.

Thanks

Rugergirl...

Your bio indicates youre in Watsonville, so stop by Markleys and try a few handguns out. Ask for Paul, he's a really nice guy and will get you all squared away.

Be sure to hold them for feel, see what's good for you.

Over there I had a few favorites:

FN 5-7 5.7x28mm
Glock 17 9mm
Sig 226 9mm
CZ-75 9mm
Springfield XD 9mm
Ruger Mk/III .22LR
HK USP .45
Various 1911's in different chamberings

I shoot out there pretty regularly if you ever want to try out my XDm or my wife's SW 422, just drop a line.

Welcome aboard from a fellow SC County resident! As suggested by others, check out the women-shooters forum here. And don't discount 22LR for learning.
