11-07-2011, 9:04 AM
On November 5, 2011 the first 'True NorCal AK Build Party' was held in Redding. At 9AM the participants began arriving at the designated location, Arisaka was our host and he graciously made his house and garage available for the event. We had 3 builds for this event, 2 from flats, one from a prebent NDS.

Alex$ came up from Chico with the sandblast cabinet, parkerizing system, tools, special tools, and served as the build supervisor due to his previous build experience.

Arisaka, Rock6.3 and the participants all provided tools which were freely shared as needed.

Participants in the inagural 'True NorCal AK Build Party' were:
SmellofCordite
Arisaka
JB-NorCal
Jeepers
Alex$
Rock6.3
MrVash

Next time we plan to have:
1. More drill presses
2. More bench grinders
3. More wire feed welders
4. More participants

For those who missed out, you will have to make do with a few photographs since we were too busy building and bsing to take many photos

Mine was fully together last night, then I tore it apart to work on some things. Bolt carrier is hanging on the hammer and my gas block is canted so I am working things out. As promised I will post pics as soon as possible.

An AK that is not working right? Did you try adjusting it with a rock?

SmellOfCordite
11-07-2011, 12:20 PM
Not yet just smoothing some things out, don't think the canted gas tube is really an issue, but it would be nice to have it straight.

Alex$
11-07-2011, 2:18 PM
If you continue to have bolt/hammer issues let me know, I can probably help work it out.

As far as the gas block, blame the Romanians, that is how they built it. In order to straighten it, you would need to press it off, turn it "straight" then press it back on.

=)

Thanks Alex, I will shoot you a pm if it doesn't work out. I understand this is an issue with Romanian AK's. Do you think moving the gas block would block the hole?

I didn't really notice the gas block being off when aligning the barrel pin, it can't br that far off. It probably wouldn't block the gas hole if you did move it.

If it were me, I wouldn't move it unless it REALLy bugs you or it doesn't cycle properly. I say test fire it and see how it goes.

I may be going to Oroville next weekend.

I am looking for a 74 or PSL kit as well. This would be my first build, so I am educating myself intensely before pulling the trigger on a kit purchase.

I was actually looking at those last night. I read some information about US barrels being a PITA to fit right, but if it is already pressed in then I would be good to go. Thanks for the heads up!

So I can buy a whole kit from AK builders and then you guys would help me build it?!?!

Please, if you do this again leave me a PM.

The only reason I havent bought a "kit"yet is I dont posess any of the tools, I have the skill though! Being a plumber helps when it comes to stuff like this.
Anyway, I'm in Ukiah and would travel anywhere North I could always get a room if its up on I5.
Thank, BC

Let me know next time there is a NorCal build party! I wouldn't mind making the trip over to Redding to hang out and build some AK's. I have the AK-Builder jigs and tools and such. And could bring whatever is still needed like a welder or press.

Here is what I worked on today, put the last coat of wipe-on poly on the furniture, bent flats for an ak74 and ak47 and then riveted on the trigger guard's and started fitting the front trunnions:

I also would like to attend and learn a thing or two. I don't have a build but have one I need to blue. Please let me know when and where.

09-13-2012, 4:40 AM
I don't have cash to put together my own rifle just yet, but I would like to attend if another Nor-Cal build party goes down. I do have a good selection of tools including a good wire feed/mig welder, grinders, and the experience to run them. For me it would be great just to meet more members, and expand my personal firearms education.

EmptyMags

I would also like to attend the next build party. I have plans for a sweet AMD-65 in 'sporting' configuration, but not all the tools or experience.

Ooohhh!! Look at the woodwork! I'm a purist about wood, and have been resisting AR/AK's because of the 'black gun' look. But this one has my attention.

(Yes, my Glocks are composite and steel, but if I can find someone to ceracote the slides in woodgrain....)

Hey guys -- first post on Calguns. :hurray: Would love to attend the next AK build party, especially if it's late Feb or early March. I'm in San Francisco so would naturally prefer one in the Bay Area but I'd be happy to drive up to Redding or Sac if that's where the critical mass for the build party is.

I just ordered a Izhmash AK74 parts kit, US Krinkov barrel, and Ohio Ordinance AK74 receiver. The receiver needs bluing and trunion+stock holes but has both rails pre-installed. I'll try to get the bluing done before the build party.

I was pretty adamant about getting an Izhmash kit -- I dated a girl for 1.5 years who actually grew up in Izhevsk Russia, the medium-sized factory town where they've been making AKs since they were created. She hates that I'm buying a gun from her hometown but, hey, we're not dating anymore! ;)

Unfortunately it may be up to a month before I have the AK74 parts kit due to the shipping backlog everyone has right now.

I need help with anything that's going to require non-trivial shop work which is quite a lot on an AK. A few weeks ago I knew nothing about the mechanics of guns. I've done an inordinate amount of research recently glued to YouTube videos and wonderfully designed gunsmith webpages but when it comes to shop skills I'm a newbie with a lot to learn. I find it all extremely fascinating so I'll be the one trying to soak up as might wisdom from you folks as possible.

Seems like there're many others hankering to do one of these. Should we put a date down and see what interest we can stir up for it?

I'm definitely interested in a build party near Sacramento as well, granted I can get a parts kit. My technical and machining skills are unfortunately little to none but have spent time reading about the process and familiarizing myself with the art of AK building.

Yes, they are.

As for which, depends on what you're going to build.

Well, in order to facilitate a build party:

May those who are interested list:

1. Whether they plan to (a) have all parts present and work on assembling, (b) on specific parts, and fit (non-receiver), (c) or working on the receiver, such as bending or heat treating.

2. When they expect to be available for the build.

3. What tools they possess.

Hello All, I am definitely interested!

I have a Romy G kit that I am dying to put together. I have the Polish bent 80% receiver that 44mag was selling for a while. I am a total newb to ak builds and don't have the tools (nor the skills) to do the job (press, riveter). Please count me in!

TahoeTim
01-29-2013, 4:02 PM
1. Ak builder flat plate, rivets, rails

2. I would like to bend, treat and fully prep the receiver. Also press in the barrel and head space if time allows.

3. Let me know what tools you need. I have a few items and would be happy to buy some tools to help in the cause.

Redding is fine for me.

I'm really interested in a build party and have no experience. Redding would be great. I am waiting on a Bulgarian milled underfolder kit I just bought, needs receiver and barrel. Could anybody tell me what additional parts I would need to build on a stamped receiver. I have read that I need front and rear trunnions and the correct barrel (I don' know which parts are compatible) . Also what flat do I need for this build? I will hopefully gather all of the parts before a party is planned. I can bring a benchtop drill press, grinder and a couple of dremels.

We need an experienced builder, lets do this.:)

Arisaka
03-13-2013, 3:08 PM
I've built a few. Virgin barrels are no big deal, you usually use a drill for the pin grooves. The only one that you can't use a drill for would be the handguard retainer groove, and those are usually cut even on a virgin barrel. If it needs cut, I've done it with a file. There are two (or more) types of virgin barrels. Some have NO work done to them at all. Some have the extractor cut/handguard retainer cut done. Some have extractor/handguard/gas port done. Just depends. Even if you get your receiver done at the BP and save population for after the party that would be cool.

You're going to need a Galil or one of these Yugo Krinkov kits if you want .223: http://armsofamerica.com/krinkovm85partskit223withchromelinedbarrel-1-1.aspx
