My name is Eric. I am originally from Michigan, but now reside in San Diego. I served four years in the Marine Corp. in the infantry. I am currently a full time student almost finished in getting my degree in Fire Science and Technology. I am an EMT and working on getting into Paramedic school and then the San Diego Fire/Rescue Academy. I was raised around guns my entire life. My father is a huge gun enthusiast back in Michigan and has more handguns, rifles and shotguns than I can count. I purchased my first handgun out here in California back in August as a home defense weapon. I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some advise about open carrying a handgun in San Diego. I know that a bill has been signed to prohibit open carry in California starting Jan. 1st 2012 but I would like to carry until then. I have read that your gun has to be unloaded, in a holster and in plain sight. I also have read that you can't carry within 1000 feet of a school. Can anyone give me any advise so that I might be able to legally carry? Thank you for your help and I look forward to hearing from anyone.

Welcome to calguns! Also from san Diego! Get ready to have people start looking at you weird and have cops come after to you. You do have the right. Make sure you have a portable recorder with you. I keep one around my neck or pocket. It will come in handy!

Have you ever been threatened to be arrested by the police? I know that they will ask to do some sort of search to check if your weapon is loaded or not. Are we allowed to carry loaded magazines on our belts as well as long as they are not in the weapon?

Hi Eric, welcome to Calguns, and thank you for serving. :patriot:

Open carry is a personal choice, or at least it is until Jan 1st, 2012. If you decide to do it make sure you understand ALL the related laws and especially know where all the school zones are.

Where can I go to study and review all of the laws for open carry? I know that when I do start to carry that I will be hassled by both civilians and police. I just want to make sure that I follow the rules so I will not get into any legal trouble.

Welcome aboard! Just so you know, most folks around here don't look in the new-to-here area for questions. So, do a search here (use the google site search) and in google for open carry. There is lots of info out there about it, I haven't read it all but I've seen it.

Welcome to the forum.

I'll steer you to the following site for more info about UOC in CA (at least until the end of the year). I'm pretty sure they will point you to the P.C. regarding UOC, and have some other resources for UOC advocates such as yourself.
