No.

Lube is required.

is there a reason why it is required?

Straight wall case carbide dies usually do not (not always) require lube, but anything else does.

I believe its because of the shape of the case. Put a tapered object into a matching tapered hole and it will stick very tight. Like a morse taper to hold the center on a lathe - friction fit. 9mm and .30 carbine are tapered, but only a little so you can still use the carbide die. The carbide is hard so it won't scratch but if it was tapered the case would still jam in there. The lube lets you use a steel die with a tapered cartridge.
