I just turned 18 recently and am interested in gunsmithing. I want to go to some classes but the nearest place that offers "NRA Certified" Smith classes is way up in Susanville. I'm in the San Jose/Bay Area and don't have the money or desire to spend a month or more up there taking classes. So does anyone know of any smithing schools or classes within say, 40-50 miles of SJ? Also, does it really have to be through the NRA? I'm very excited and want to be able to work on my own guns in the future, so I would love some hands-on teaching and experience.

Thanks in advance,

You may consider starting with the machining side and mastering some of the tools/techniques that are used in gunsmithing. Your local ROP program or community college would be a good place to start on this path.
