I finally finished my first AR! It started life as a Ruger SR-556E bought from Turner's on super sale a few months ago. It was my first AR platform gun ever. I wanted to go for a fully built gun and had really heard nothing but good things about the Ruger. Combine that with the great sale (about $300 off MSRP), and I've got myself a brand new AR15.

I wasn't a fan of small things here and there and spent the following months swapping, changing, and accessorizing until I got what I think is a great, fun little rifle. I had never dealt with a modular system before and I learned a bunch about what I like, want, and don't want in an AR. Definitely will use that knowledge in future AR builds. (BTW, that MK AR scope is up for sale, and I will soon replace the Magpul front MBUS with one that won't melt if mounted to the gas block )

Final product:

Next one will probably be 18 or 20" for bipod/bench/prone distance shooting. :chris:

Nice rifle. I would build a normal AR15 also. When you have extra cash buy replacement parts for the piston system. I know Ruger isnt going anywhere, but parts may become scarce when you need them. If the operating rod snaps on you in 25 years, it will not be easy to get one.. LOL

Very nice rifle man.

That is one of the best looking AR's I've seen. It's different but in a good way. What kind of rail is that? I want one.

Can you just list all the important specs?

Stock Ruger SR556E handguard and rail. I know the Ruger SR556 upper can be bought on its own, but I don't know about the E model. 16" barrel, 1:9 twist, piston driven action with variable gas block (from 0-3). It's wearing a lot of Magpul stuff: CTR stock, MIAD grip (fattest insert, finger rest removed), AFG2 (finger rest removed), front and rear MBUS (moved back off gas block), EOTech XPS 2-0, BattleComp 1.5 brake.

Nice rifle. very simple and clean. Not loaded down with ten tons of mall ninja garbage. Exactly what a zombie defense rifle should be.

Yeah, I already have a heavy, scoped, bipod M1A. I figured I'd keep things relatively simple for my first AR. :)

Any idea if you can get the handguard seperately or is design to only work with the Ruger piston system? In other words, can I put that rail on my DI AR?

I doubt it. I know Ruger uses their own proprietary piston system so they probably designed it around that. I remember reading somewhere that Troy designed/built the handguard, but the closest thing I could find from them is this: http://troyind.com/battlerails/alpha-battlerails I also added some plastic screw-on pieces so as not to burn my hand (again, proprietary from Ruger: http://shopruger.com/SR-556E-Handguard-Covers-3-Pack/productinfo/90373/).
