i was looking through the Big 5 ads for this week and noticed a
Charles Daly Field 12 Gauge Shotgun for only $199. and i thought at that price there must be something wrong with a gun or a catch. Anyone have or used/held one beore? thanks

Why? Last year Big5 was selling Mossberg 500 for that price

it's an akkar shotgun from turkey. seemed ok at a glance..not as nice as some other turkish models, but maybe that was just the finish. The proof is in the metalurgy, which is maybe good, maybe not.

The mossberg was, about a year and a half ago being promo'd for $219 on special sale days. You'd be lucky to see a mossy go for $239 right now with inflation and all.

I thought about buying one just to play around with since the controls are the same as an 870, which is what I use. The dros fees and tax push it to about $250 though.

I bought one a few months ago. Out of the box, the barrel would not fit into the reciever. I had to file some areas of the barrel to have it seat properly. Once that was on, the shotgun looks good, shoulders well for me and overall quality is whats to be expected from a $200 shotgun. I shot about 100 shells through it doing skeet with my own thrower. I like the shotgun and will be will be calling my safe home for a while....

I bought the Field VR-MC semi auto about 3-4 years ago and haven't had any major problems besides a couple jams. I shot about 1000 rounds through it. I haven't had anything break, but I hear that Charles Daly has a good return policy. Pretty accurate also. I was able to toss 6 clays with my left hand and hit them all with six shots. Having the semi keeps the recoil down.

Were you looking at the Field semi or pump? If it's the semi thats a great deal on it. I paid $299 for mine.

Remember that akkar is the new supplier for Smith and Wesson SG's. although their product line will have nicer wood and finishing treatment and maybe other newer features..of course the charles daly price will not be one of those features.

The ad I saw this weekend was for the pump. Here's my take on it.

For the money, I'd buy a Mossberg 500 instead of the Charles Daly pump. The price difference is small, you get a lot better supported gun with a strong history, and if you buy the combo, you get a dual-purpose gun.

For the semi-auto, that's a lot more tempting, as it's much cheaper than the big names.

Overall, the CDs get decent reviews, though fit and finish tends to be a bit rough, as others have noted.

Bought the pump "Field Tactical" from Big 5 last year, no issues with it yet.

The Charles Daly pump appears to be the same gun as the Escort pump imported by Legacy Sports.

The Escort is made by Hatsan in Turkey.

I bought an Escort Aimguard three years ago for $200 out the door. It has a chrome lined bore, the fit and finish is good and so far it's been 100% reliable.

yeah, the $199 was for the pump. I guess ill take a look at the Field Semi-Auto since a lot of you are recommending it.
