anything that shoots 50bmg is illegal to buy, import, etc in CA

except, according to some interpretations, non-rifle firearms (i.e. crew-served weapons)

.50 caliber weapons are not illegal. The .50BMG is illegal, calibers like .500S&W and .510 DTC are perfectly legal.

In other words, if the rifle is chambered in .50BMG it is illegal.

Only .50BMG rifles are illegal.

Ok, i was thinking on the lines of SB23 as semi auto, verses bolt action. So as far as 50's go, anything in a rifle configuration is no longer allowed then?

No, as far as .50BMG goes anything in a rifle configuration is illegal.

It helps if you're clear with the terminology. .50BMG is the only banned .50 caliber.

Do a search, this topic has been talked about before...

While we are on this topic, has anyone DROS'ed in a Browning M2HB yet? Or at least the right side plate? :D

If you have a registered AR15 lower, you would still be able to put a 50BMG upper on it. Otherwise, the .510DTC or the 50ALS are still viable options. They are both based on the 50BMG cartriage, use the same componants and produce very similar results.

Ok, thanks for the info, actually im not even that interested in the 50, i just thought this precision rifle i saw was pretty cool, so i was curious. But just out of my 50cal NON knowledge,,, what makes the 50bmg more dangerous and evil as to compared to the other two calibers you mentioned?

Same thing that makes an AR-15 more deadly than a Mini-14

Nothing

The alternate acronyms (B)ig (M)ofo (G)un makes it extremely more sinister. ;)

[not to mention that it is superbly accurate when shot from the hip]

Here's another .50 based option, READ the first line under 14.5mm JDJ... http://www.sskindustries.com/14_5.htm

There are further .50 BMG based options out there but it requires you to have a custom built rifle and ability to wildcat your own cases. For those of you that don't know, Mark Serbu changed the new BFG's in 50 DTC so that they are standard with EDM. http://www.serbu.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=430
