do I have to list the 3 guns WHEN I apply or can I list them AFTER I apply?

do I have to purchase the guns BEFORE I apply? or can I get the guns AFTER I apply/get the CCW lisc?

In Humboldt County you declare which weapon (s) you will carry after your permit has been approved but before the license is issued. I had to switch to the Sherrifs Department two years ago, and I applied as a new applicant. After the background was finished and approval had been granted then they wanted to know which weapons to put on the permit. In fact I had to bring them in so the LT could verify the serial numbers.

In Ventura County it says you have to list what you want before you get your permit, but I buy guns and add them whenever I want.

I keep hearing that CCW guns may have to be on the approved list.

Do folks out there have newer-issued CCWs with old guns assigned to them that were never on the 'safe gun' list?

If you don't wanna speak up in public here, please PM me.

CCW's don't need to be on an "Approved List," that is for purchasing only. Just not part of the PC codes on CCW. Now on the other hand the Sheriff may want you to have somthing newer. The Sheriff is the only one to add restrictions to a CCW permit other than whats in the PC.

My Sheriff for a fee will add and subtact.

Welcome to the US of A! ;)

You list your firearms on your application, up to 3. You can always add and delete later on for a minimal fee (I don't know the amount off hand). This involves taking the new ones in, having the a detective or investigator verify make, model, serial number and caliber and probably making a comment or three to you about it. You tell them which you are replacing on the permit, you keep your old permit until you get the new one in the mail shortly after.

The only restrictions are that the gun cannot be registered to anybody else and they would like to see REAL self defense calibers. If you come in with a 25 or a 380 you will get "the look" :)

Our Sheriff is a good man who trusts law abiding citizens of the county by giving them CCW's as long as they have a clean background and good character. The website does not say much about CCW but Sheriff Penrod's actions speak volumes!

As to a gun being on the "Approved List" some counties require that, San Berdo does not.

Every county is different, San Berdo wants to see what they consider "real" self defense calibers. 9mm and up. They will let you put it on your permit, but you will get "the look" and you might get the "look, I can't tell you what kind of gun to buy..." talk. They liked my guns, they REALLY liked another person's 44 mag :D

i have 1 .45 on mine, but i dont like to carry it, its too big, i forget i have my 380 with me. when i got on trips, i keep the 45 in the glove box while i have the 380 on my belt or inside the door. I carry mine everyday everywhere, thats why i like them small.

You will list 3 guns after your approved...when you fill out the exact permit as well as fingerprint the permit.

Should you decide to change out a weapon prior to your 2 year renewal...it's only a matter of $25-$50 processing fee.

Go to www.californiaccw.org and ck out the specific forum for your county. If you have any CCW questions, there's plenty of people hanging around there to answer them.

When you take your firearms safety class, don't you have to "qualify" with the guns that you want to carry? I thought I read that somewhere not too long ago.

I was told in the CCW class I took recently that the SO will expect you to show competence with the three exact guns you list, same serial numbers, etc. Those three guns, not others of the same make and model, etc. If you have two identical guns, one listed on your permit, the other not, you can't carry the one not listed, even while the listed one is in for repairs, etc.

That turns out to be true for new CCW applicants.....My renewal is up in the next few months, but turns out I only have to attend the 4 hour firearms safety class.:p

New applicants will need to show proficiency at the county sherriff range.:D

Qualification varies from county to county. San Berdo requires you to qualify with ONE of your permit guns, 12 rounds unscored. They are focusing on muzzle and trigger discipline, they expect you to become proficient with your gun on your own time. They really just want to make sure you aren't going to unintentionally point the thing at somebody and also make sure you don't have your finger on the trigger.

BTW, San Berdo is a 4 hour class whether or not it is the initial class or a renewal.

San berdo charges $25 to change your permit, you can change all three guns if you want. No additional qualification is required.

True....but then again...its nowhere in the penal code; might make for an interesting test case....but I dont wanna be the one:p
