Hey guys I recently posted a thread on this site inquiring about an ak74 with a $500 dollar budget. You can find this thread here:

However, the more I've thought about it, I'm not sure if I want another 47 or a new 74. I already have an SGL21 and love it. Which do you guys prefer?

How about a Franklin X0-26 in 7.62X39? Seems like a fun alternative for that calibre.

AK74...I was in your situation yesterday but I went AK47...I have almost 5000 rounds of 7.62x39 though and to go to another platform is me hoarding more ammo. If you have tons of 7.62x39 then stay with that platform...If you want to have multiple platforms then take the plunge. It gets pricey. Pricey as in buying ammo for multiple platforms.

Some ranges also have ammo limitations. Mine does not so I can shoot whatever I want fire season or not.

74 ammo is cheap and you can hit things out to about 500 meters

My only concern is that the range I go to does not allow for the use of steel core ammo, and I know most 5.45 is. However, I live 2 hours from the desert and if the advantages of the 5.45 and the 74 are big enough, then I'll take the plunge. My budget is about $600-$700.

Why not try to get all calibers covered? That's how I looked at it...

I have a PSL, Ak74, and SKS...

so... covered on most ak type rifles..

Yeah, that was my concern too. Where are you from? I have a range near me that has no ammo restrictions but they are kind of pricey. The rainy season is almost here so these outdoor ranges with shrubs n' stuff around them just be okay with our steel core ammo. Dude, for $600-700, get the Interarms IAC AK-74 from Atlantic Firearms. It's still on sale for $600($20 shipping). They couldn't tell me when the sale was over so I'd say buy it ASAP! haha. 1,080 rounds for $140 online for this caliber, good stuff :)

Why not buy a 74 kit, attend a build party and be done for about $500 total? :)

You just answered your question. Get an AK47 pattern and go order ammo from AIM. $214 for brass cased ammo...You are good to go.

AK74!!!!
better accuracy!
better distance!
Less recoil = faster follow up shots!
Just as reliable as a 47!
Ammo is cheaper!
Very deadly round!
and since the ak74 is actually the rifle that replaced the ak47 in russia and is the issued rifle to the russian military AMMO WILL NOT DRY UP!!!!!
