Ive been looking at a vise block for future builds. Anyone have any recommendations? Ive looked at Midway's "Model 1" kit for $45 which seems nice but i've also found these http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XSCUFD&name=Schuster+Mfg.+AR%2fM16+Delrin+Upper+Fixture&groupid=55

input? Preference?

Thanks

This one looks like a better designed vise block: http://www.riflegear.com/p-350-dpms-panther-receiver-claw.aspx

This is the one I use and I love it! It's made by PRI and allows you to mount the upper by the take down pin holes or you can flip it over and slide the rail of a flat top upper into it.

I was just able to disassemble an LR308 and then put it back together with my PRI picatinny rail clamp block.

It will work on any upper with a picatinny rail and probably works as good or better than the DPMS Panther Claw style.

And another thing, I was missing a vise but I was able to clamp the block and receiver down to the wooden workbench with wood screws and a few washers. Deffinitely not the right way to do it but probably impossible with a plastic block.

This one doesn't say barrel work like the DPMS Panther one does.

I have seen posted pics of upper receivers with the tangs ripped off trying barrel work.

If you are using a flat top upper you can use one like this.... and it fits AR-15 and the 308's too. This style will become very popular for flat top uppers.

I like the idea of 2 pieces of the plastic on the outside for the flat top. But I think i might grab the dpms "like" one since ill probably have a build with a carry handle eventually.

Wow, that's a pretty cool block set! Do you sell them? I looked on your website but I didn't see it.

My vote is for the DPMS one. I like how it "supports" the upper inside as well. The PRI one is not meant for installation of a barrel nut. You can tweak the upper.

Brownell's Action Block (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=22385/Product/AR-15-M16-UPPER-RECEIVER-ACTION-BLOCK) is also a good one and comes with an insert so you don't crush the upper receiver. They might marr the finish of the upper but most people just wrap a rag around the receiver before placing it into the block.

So basically: DPMS Panther Receiver Claw or the Brownell's Action Block

Do I spy some kind of insert where the bolt carrier would be?

The DPMS one works great. It is also recommended by Mega if you are assembling a billett upper

Used the DPMS white one a few times for barrel changes and other stuff for ease of access and its done its job fine so far.
I like that 2 piece set for a vice block, I think that would be nice for a barrel change.
