Is it required to have a dedicated 9mm upper (the type with the ejection port cover cut down and shell deflector further forward) or can I use a std. 5.56 upper receiver? Looking the pictures of RRA 9mm dedicated upper I cant tell if its just a std 5.56 upper with the port cover cut down and a shell deflector bolted on somehow or if its a completely different forging)

You can use a standard 5.56 upper. But you will probably get some gas blow back without the deflector. Not that big of a deal for me. But you should forgo your build and by mine: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=485320 Sorry for the shameless plug.

nice rig- waaaaay outta my league though, I'm a cheap bastard and am looking to build mine under 500. After looking at the picture of the 9mm shell deflector on the RRA website, it looks like it can be added to an RRA upper if not others.
