Which would you choose?
I have a saiga 308 16in barrel already converted. I wanna trade that plus cash for a ar10, m1a, socom, or a ar15 and turn it into a 454socom.
Anyways I got offered a psl,
So which would you choose? And why? I love 308 and have NO experience with 762x54.

I dont care about cost I have around 7k rounds of 308 good surplus and couple hundred rounds of match grade 308. Accuracy is what i'm after and killing power.

Ha ha, whoa there killer!

On the accuracy bit, Id go with .308

More options out of the box, more tried and true formulas if you load your own.

I mean killing power on game not people lol the 308 in a 16in barrel would be my last gun id use that thing would blow my eardrums out in the house.

Keep the 308. The only way your ever going to get the PSL to group like a 308 is to install a heavy barrel. The PSL's barrel is good for 4-5 good shots before they open up do to heat build up. The 308 offers a better range of ammo and when threaded at 5/8x24 your able to utilize any ar10 muzzle device.

This...PSL hands down. Romanian made and not frankenstein build? As bad as I want a Yugo M70 if someone said I would give you 4 Yugos for your PSL I would walk away...That is how much I like my PSL both in accuracy, reliability, and awesome looks.

You have seen the thread on a PSL accuracy on AK Files...It is no slouch. There are several...There was a show that showed the accuracy of a PSL and it did very well. Vid is on AK files...If the guy is offering you a Romanian built PSL...GET IT. You will see there are few PSLs to buy from stores or online. You can get your saiga every day of the week with no effort. Try that with a PSL. Remember this is CGNsaiga.net...You are asking about a PSL for a Saiga...

I'll check out the video. I just know that 308 is a spectacular round with alot of options for animal killing rounds.

If you plan on using it for hunting than a .308 Saiga might be a better option just because of the superior ammo choices...

That said, even with that pencil thin barrel on the PSL, as long as you're not rapid firing you'll never want for accuracy on the PSL.

Personally, I think it's win-win no matter which way you go, I just think the PSL is significantly sexier and I'm willing to deal with the magazine hassles to have one. Oh, and let's not forget ammo cost!

If you do not hand load, .308 is the clear choice. All kinds of really accurate ammo is available. Ditto hunting loads.

7.62x54r has lots of power and potential, but it is my understanding that nobody has made dedicated match or sniper ammo for it. Hunting ammo is available, but selection is quite limited.

Of course, if you hand load this would not be a problem.

You need to be careful of the ammo you run in the PSL. Most of that stuff is made for mosin bolt guns and will hammer the PSL's rear trunnion.
I know the PSL will group well, but once that barrel starts getting hot they will open up.

wait a second why are you trading the 1000 yard AK?

but back on topic, the PSL is a good choice, but if your wallet is willing the m1a would be very nice as well. Ballistically the 7.62x54r is closest to a 30-06, but with the correct load .308 can out preform 30-06. If it was my rifle and my money I would get my PSL again.

I definitely know 308 is a great round. I have shot enough bolt actions to realize the accuracy it gives as well. This weekend I have decided to get the Savage FCP-SR which is an $1100 bolt gun with magazine. Will out shoot my PSL...I know it will. Will it walk the Saiga...All day long. However those are two totally different rounds. I am going pig hunting with my PSL near the end of the year...I will let you know how it goes. BTW army guy I know got shot with a PSL in Iraq...He hates my gun and the round.

Well said...I would get my PSL every day of the week over any gun I have. The guy trading you the PSL for the Saiga is not in the know...Get it if you know more details. BTW my PSL shoots out to 400yrds at SLOSA. It hangs with the bolt actions. It gets walked in group once you creep out but it remains respectable. People freaking love my PSL that my buddies get annoyed by it.

One of these days im just going to have to drive down to the SLO range just for a nice day of PSL shooting. Do they have any ammo restrictions there and is it the range inbetween SLO and Morro bay off the the 1?

I have both a romanian psl and a saiga 308 21". Both are quite accurate however the saiga with it's super heavy barrel stays more accurate over time. The psl is very heavy compared to the saiga, it somehow recoils less than my sks(my girlfriend can shoot the psl all day but she refuses to shoot the saiga 308 or mosin), and is sexy as hell. My saiga has tighter tolerences and seems put together better with the exception of the heavy trigger pull. Oh let me mention that, my psl came with a incredibly light trigger from the factory and has a very predictable break. Where-as the saiga 308 has the "19 century crossbow" pull up bull**** trigger but one can live with it. In conclusion, I say keep your saiga and buy a psl. Both are beautiful firearms!

Have you converted your saiga yet? Once I put the tapco trigger in trigger pull is really much better than the linked trigger that originally came with the rifle.

no mines stock and It'll get converted and grip wrapped one day. For now I'd rather spend the money on ammo!

That is quite the toss up. Both will be just fine for what you want. I love my short barrel psl to death. I have shot a 308 saiga, only complaint is weak feed lips on the mag I was using which caused a jam during initial load but I bet there are better mags out there and or may just need to be stored empty.

The factory mags are the best! I keep 2 rounds in the mag at all times for coyote control. Also i've never had a jam in mine its a beast! I want a psl but after looking at ammo options i'm gonna wait until I find one dirt cheap or more ammo comes out for it.

I vote PSL. I hand load 7.62x54R and I've had amazing results even in my Mosin with a shot out barrel. I've always loved the PSLs, and being able to buy cheap cheap ammo is awesome. There are some ammo types, as others have stated, that you shouldn't shoot with your PSL, but they are easy to spot. IIRC, the PSL is not designed to shoot the 180 grain bullets.

Come on down!!!...Heck my buddy has a 3 bedroom and could put you up for the weekend NO CHARGE. Come on down brother. It would be nice to shoot with another PSL shooter...Last time was in WA where there was 3 or 4 of us.

There is no ammo restriction, we shoot as fast as we want, and the range goes up to 300yrds paper and 400yrds steel plates. Has a handgun range as well. It is between SLO and MB. I have tons of 7.62x39 if you want to shoot some of the other AK patterns as well.

PM me if you ever want to take me up on the offer. have gone to the range in Chabot but it is way to short.

The Siaga with Match grade ammo or hand loads will group 1 MOA to sub depending on who is shooting it. PSL well it's a great gun but the ammo sucks! No matter how accurate the rifle the groups will be around 3moa

3 MOA? 1 inch group consistently? The Saiga is an AK pattern...No AK pattern will group 1 MOA consistently all day 24/7/52. Never.
Someone did the test in AKFiles and they do not even come close to what you are saying. Not even close. As far 3 MOA...I don't get that. I get 1.5 to 2 consistently and I have shot well over 5500 rounds through my PSL.

That seems to be CGNSaiga.net talking again.

Alrite we've been in alot of threads together, and I believe when I decided to switch from the ar platform to the AK you were part of that one too!
So you know i'm not a fan of sgl's @ssenol, or that saigas are cream of the crop! I have wasr's and have built many of my own ak's as a matter of fact i'm gonna build another bulgarian AK74 tomorrow.
With that said this saiga 308 is very accurate! Consistantly 1moa? No but I can get 1moa in 5round groups with good match ammo and when its not 1moa its close.
I have low interest in any other saiga rifle but the 308saiga is bad@ss and a great buy.
