View Full Version : I need a cheap safe.

PandaLuv

I know there is a safe section but this forum gets more views so, I need a safe for a soon to be obtained AK, my 3 handguns and ammo. Not too big, around $200. Yeah, I'm cheap but a cheap safe is better than no safe.

My collection is growing, weather if I like it or not, and I like it a lot. So maybe capacity of 3 rifles and 6 handguns?

Appreciate the input.

Some people are going to say that if you don't spend $1500 you might as well put them out on the curb, but I agree with you.

Stack on makes gun cabinets that you can find for $100 delivered, on sale, and some on the forum might have one for sale too. Their "safes" look to be their cabinets with some doo dads and padding added for twice the price.

I think for $200 you can get a small pistol safe and a gun cabinet. It is not a bad idea to make long guns inoperable by removal of the bolt, to be stored in the other safe.

Location is important. If you can figure out a spot that makes using a long pry bar difficult, it is very good.

I have a stack on that I got for a present. It does the job. I wouldent trust a house fire with it but it works until I can afford a good quality one

Save $200 more for a Liberty Centurion 12?
You'd be much happier than getting a gun cabinet.

At Lowe's you can get the Liberty Centurion 12 for around $250 when they go on sale. Keep and eye out.

Just saying, I keep all my guns locked in their cases and hidden. No kids in the house and I only keep one of them loaded if something happens. It's just getting hard since I'm buying more and more. The gun cabinet kinda sounds like a waste of money because I would still need a safe for the bolt.

Any decent safe for around 300-400 besides Liberty.

I have this and fits my needs. They usually have $20 off $100 coupons, so find a filler item and it was like $80 something shipped to my door.

Are you asking if there are any others besides Liberty? Or are you stating that anything OTHER than Liberty? Punctuation is key Russki!

FYI I have one of the Liberty 12's and it's pretty good. Wouldn't hesitate to buy again, but I have so many guns now that I need to step it up to a 24.

I would look at the lowes or costco safes, stay away from sentry if you can, I went around and around with them for over a month after the handle broke off the safe right after I got it out of the box. They did not even know what part went in their own safe and kept sending me one that was to large and had I used it the lower locking lugs would have disengaged from the control mechanism and locked the safe permanently.

cant speak for the quality of the other safes, but speaking for myself I would avoid Sentry.

I just have a Stack-On 10 gun cabinet, it fits perfectly in my closet. Has for a safe, 250 is the cheapest I've seen and they have the same rating as the cabinets. time to break in, cabinet is around 5-15 minutes and safe can be from 5mins to 4 hours.

Go to Costco, Lowes or places like that and get a decent safe for around a few hundred bucks. Hide it and bolt it down.

A gun cabinet does NOTHING but say free guns inside. Those are for keeping children etc. out, not criminals.

The Stack-On cabinets are not Cal-DOJ approved. If you're looking for one to avoid having to buy a gun lock when picking up your AK, you need one that is approved.

Nice find on the Centurion at Lowes. Hopefully it will go on sale for $250 as said by Christmas time.

+1 for this... I have the same one and I'm pleased with it (although no "real-world" bad guy tests have been performed thus far, fortunately)

If you open a Lowe's Credit Card when you buy it you get 6 or 12 months (I forget) same as cash to pay it off. Do pay it off before that though, as the card has a VERY high interest rate.

cheap safe = cheap security...

some security is better than nothing at all but a safe is an investment.
think about it... if you own 10k in guns, but skip on protecting the 10k of guns what the point? you just lost 10k you worked hard for.

more than guns tend to end up in a safe.

documents, identification (ssn cards, passports) etc etc

contact http://www.westcoastsafes.com/

they are good folks to deal with. me and several friends have bought safes from them.
they also buy old safes for 70% of what you paid.
they also sell used safes.

I've looked on the DoJ site to see if the Lowe's safe was on the list. Couldn't find it, but I did see one other post saying that it is approved for CA DoJ. Anyone have a link for that?

To the OP, apparently if your interested the Lowe's safe seems to go on sale in December per the previous posts here on Calguns. $279 for a 300# safe with 20 min fire rating is not bad. Not to mention I bet some coupons come around that time of year as well. I looked at this safe a couple days ago and actually liked it a lot. Not to big, not to small. Heavier then a Stack-on and feels like a safe. The only draw back is if it's not on CA DoJ. Would be nice to just fill out the safe affidavit, then getting a safe lock for each purchase!

Eh, people have safes for different reasons. Mine are to protect my kids and their friends.

My safe is in my studio, and I have way more guitars and music equipment in that room then my 6 rifles, so it would be silly to claim the safe was to protect my guns from burglars (yes the safe is bolted down), and I would cry much more over the guitars burning in a fire then the guns. I have insurance for theft/fire purposes, and while there are a few irreplaceable guitars in there, I don't believe in safe queen guitars no more then I believe in safe queen guns.

If you own a safe to protect your guns from the people breaking into your house, then your purpose is different then mine, and I wish you luck with that (consider a trained dog?).

well, it's more for my family. They're really anti gun, since I still live with them (in this economy i don't give a **** what people think). I guess that kinda gives them a piece of mind that the guns are locked in a safe.
No one is safe from being burglarized but I do live in a nice neighbor hood, and I can always buy more guns.

Just get a simple cabinet then, to appease them, and save for a better safe.

My thoughts on the matter have always been that a safe is more of a visual safety. I don't expect for someone to go through all that trouble and planning to get to my smallish gun collection in a lower middle class neighborhood. Just seems like theres faster and easier ways to steal something. Criminals are lazy, remember that.

Any deterrent is better than no deterrent. If you have the space for it and can afford one of those safes that will stop anything short of a direct hit from a nuclear weapon then, by all means, buy one. If not then get what you can afford now. Even if it is just one of those Stack-on cabinets.

I believe that the Centurion 12 is not CA DOJ approved. All the Centurion's above it are.

Same thing I heard. The best safes seem to me are the AmSec. They have the things they tell you to look for in a safe.

Their small model TF5517 Features:
•3/16" Steel Plate door with 2 layers of fire insulating material.
•Mercury Class I fire protection of 1200°F for 30 minutes. Designed to maintain an interior temperature of less than 350°F.
•Palusol™ door seal - expands up to 8 times its original thickness when exposed to high temperatures.
•Body constructed of 14-gauge solid steel plate with a fire insulating material.
•3-wheel combination lock with spy-proof dial and drill resistant hardplate.
•Optional electronic lock available.
•3-way boltwork with 5 active 1" chrome-plated bolts and 3 deadbolts.
•Textured Black exterior and Mocha fabric interior including back-cover and firewalls.
•Four (4) pre-cut anchor holes with mounting hardware included and one (1) pre-cut electrical access hole.
•Optional 4-shelf kit available.
•Warranty: 1 Year Parts and Labor.

Only has a 1yr warranty but its build better then some 2K safes I've seen. Tunner had them on sale for like $489, and the model up for a bit more which was a great deal for these safes. I wish there was a Tunner in the BayArea I would have got one.
Dom in Livermore has them for about $600, I was comparing the safes there and from what I read and seem I’ll take a AmSec. Yes something is better then nothing, but if that something is fire, you better hope it can take the heat.
I really would like to get the TF5924 but I'm not sure my floor can take the weight were I want to put it at 388 lbs.

I've been doing a bit of checking on different companies and so far I got AmSec company as #1 and Liberty #2.
The safes they sell at Costco (not to disillusion anyone) there more like very heavy cabinets but the fire and thief qualities are low
You don’t want a safe that will be safe while you’re around, you want a safe you can take off for a month and feel secured that it and everything you put in it will still be there even if your house is not.

I’ve been thinking about the Centurion because they had them on sale at the Sports Authority near to where I live but it doesn’t really sing to me. If I can find it for real cheap I guess I would give in, but it I can find a AmSec 5517 on sale around here, she mine.

Javi
10-14-2011, 7:17 PM
Those AmSec's look pretty good but I don't know them well. Yeah, I see them often in Turners' ads. The Liberty has them beat on price thanks to Lowes, of course. Mmm, I guess the CA DOJ could come in handy if I buy a safe in 3-5 weeks when I bring home my AK but after that, I won't be buying a firearm until next Summer(I really hope I can resist).

It's $179 at Wally World. Shipping is free if you pick it up at one of the stores. You can use it to store ammo later when you out grow it... and be assured... you will. :)
