I hope someone calls in and asks him why he didn't write a more realistic book as the sequel to "Patriots". Instead he wrote a book about a guy traveling from Germany to the USA overland, and a couple that had 2 airplanes in the garage to bug out. Pssh. No realism.

My buddy has 5 airplanes in his garage.

So was it interesting, or just rehashing stuff we all already know? And, 4 hours? That must be the whole radio show, and not the JWR part?

My buddy has 5 airplanes in his garage.

Fair enough, but I was hoping for something a little more realistic from Rawles this time around. Not too many of us are going to have the money or resources to get to the level of "the group" in patriots, and not many of us have airplanes to bug out with. I was hoping he would explore what it would be like for someone with a couple months worth of food, some guns and a few thousand rounds of ammo.

Before the US Gov changed the metal content of nickels there was a value to them which exceeded the .05 in precious metals. Its not silver/gold thing but either nickel, copper or both.

http://www.coinflation.com will tell you all about it. One or two won't matter much but I guess in bulk you'd have more than you money's worth in metals.

Current value in metals is $.0504 I believe. So I guess you have a 1,000 of them instead of $50 whole dollars you might have $50 whole dollars and 40 cents. Wahoo....

nickel and copper is way down. It was nearly .07 worth of metal just a few weeks ago.
Besides, its not about buying nickels to make money(yet), its about buying the last currently minted currency that is actually worth its face value so that if the dollar collapses entirely, you have SOMETHING in small denominations to trade. A good mix would be silver bullion, "junk" silver coins, sterling silver of various things from jewelry to coins, and some gold jewelry or bullion. Nickels are still all the same, even the 2011 nickels so its easy to go to your bank and buy $20 worth every week or so. Yes its kind of bulky, but its real.

About the electrical transformers that Rawles was talking about.

I used to work on the substation transformers. We used to fix bullet holes all the time. The housings are pretty thick so most rounds wont penetrate. But those that do wont destroy the transformer. Generally they just short out between the windings and melt. Besides the oil loss there is usually no permanent damage. Just epoxy on a patch and refill the oil. Generally they will just lose some load capacity due to heat but thats it. There was this one transformer that had thousands of bullet holes in it. It still functions well.

So I wouldnt worry too much about them.
