its not a semi automatic, but it has other features, so would it still be an assault weapon?

If it's a rifle chambered in 50BMG it is an "assault rifle" that is illegal to own in CA unless it was registered before the "ban."

If it's a .50 BMG rifle, then it is banned by itself whether or not it has other features.

though I thought you could do .50bmg AOW's??

CA doesn't ban 50 BMG chambered firearms, just 50 BMG chambered rifles. If a gun is not a rifle (pistol, AOW, tripod mounted long gun, etc) it is not illegal for it to be chambered in 50 BMG.

So, theoretically you can build/buy a pistol chambered in 50 BMG, or even a semi-auto M2, which I've seen done.

You can have an .50bmg in Kalifornia if you dont use a buttstock. there is thread in here somewhere of a guy doing it.

I'm pretty sure there are some laws against any caliber .50 or larger unless it's a shotgun...

so you could modify a .50BMG to .4999999BMG and it'd be ok :D

A lot of people have never seen a US Optics SN-9 before...

PC limits it to 60cal actually.

And 510DTC is just a slight modification on 50bmg, and thus GTG for a rifle

Yep, you can own a .50 DTC rifle which has identical ballistics and uses the same load components. A number of manufacturers offer this caliber as an option. Or, you could go with an M2HB, but it doesn't have the same blast and overpressure fun factor and is way more $$.

What brand rifle is that in the video? The left side charging handle is unusual. That optic setup is spectacular!

Hey thats my old rife. Well I use to have just like that.:D That's a COBB FA50 (Fast Action). Was a neat concept but had some problems with extraction. Scope looks to be a U.S. Optic SN-9? The guy shooting it I believe is the owner of ARMUSA. That video brings back old memories...:)

Guy might be one of the lucky few to have a dangerous weapons permit or it may be a registered rifle.

No that was taken back before the Ca .50bmg ban. ARMUSA was located out of Anaheim Ca and use to specialize in .50bmgs. I think he moved after the ban to Lake Havasu I think.

I can see how that straight pull would be problematic with hot loads. Rubber hammer time....

his shooting mat has this site listed on it. http://www.50bmgstore.com/ They're in Lake Havasu City, AZ
. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that he's shooting in CA.

I'd heard that it was originally designed to be a Semi-auto, the SA50, but that thye had issues with it running semi-automatically, so they removed the gas system and sold it as the FA50.

OP, what about one of these?

.338 Lapua AR type rifle.

If you install a bullet button, it should be Cali legal, no?

You are correct.:) Then after they had issues with the Fast-Action then went ahead and designed it to a true bolt-action setup then shortly after Bushmaster bough them out.

so .50 bmg is banned by caliber, but if it doesn't have a buttstock it's legal?

if it doesn't have a buttstock can you have semi-auto and magazine fed?

Not quite. A RIFLE, chambered in 50BMG, is illegal to possess in CA without it being a registered AW.

Other firearms, such as pistols, tripod mounted title 1 long guns without butt stocks, and AOWs amongst a few others, that are not considered "rifles" can be chambered in 50BMG.

The second part of your post is somewhat correct, insomuch as a rifle is defined as having a buttstock in the law. I am not sure if you can rip your buttstock off of your rifle and then chamber it for 50BMG just like that. I'll let someone else comment on that.

An AR 15 lower with a 50 BMG upper and spade grip in place of the shoulder stock would be perfectly legal in CA, correct?

if you had a spade grip on a .50 bmg upper that was put on an ar15 lower like the one in that picture, with only a bipod, wouldn't the recoil break your thumbs?

nmaybe i guess not if you're holding the grips.

yes, thats Frank who used to own ArmUSA in Fullerton. Him and his wife Jolene used to set up 50 cal shoots at the "Eagle Nest" which is a remote range that shares the same impact area as the main Angeles range. The best part of the "shoots" was when we lined up all the 50's (Cobbs, TNW's AW, Barret's etc) and just wailed on a single target. We also had belt and mag dump sessions for all the semis (about 10+ of them). The report from all of them going off brought me back to my USMC days. I returned to the main range a week later and spoke to one of the range staff and he said everyone stopped when we all opened up.... Frank's also a distributor for US Optics which is why that SN-9 is sitting on top of the rifle. I believe its a 9-12 month wait to get that scope since its handbuilt.
