 I don't know if any of you were planning on attending this event, but I just got this email:

Dear Appleseeder:

The Saugus, CA Appleseed event has unfortunately been canceled.

RWVA has been advised by legal counsel that certain California laws in conjunction with a potential strong anti-gun bias of local prosecutors could create problems for the program and those who attend it.

We do not want anyone, at any time, to be exposed to wrongful prosecution for exercising basic constitutional rights.

We are not writing California off the books. We will be hosting Appleseeds in neighboring states: Fallon, NV, March 17/18, Yakima WA, April 21/22, and Medford, Oregon, July 21/22.

We hope to see our California Appleseeds at one of those this year.

Needless to say, it's a decision that was unexpected - that in this country, things are already so bad in one state that organizers and sponsors of a harmless program like the Appleseed program do not wish to be placed in jeopardy of wrongful prosecution - or see anyone else placed in jeopardy of prosecution - for exercise of our rights.

If you know of a location in California in a friendlier spot [non-LA] and they are agreeable to hosting an Appleseed program, let us know.

In the meantime, if your pre-reg fee has been received and cashed by RWVA, it will be either 1) refunded or 2) a certificate will be sent good for any future Appleseed you choose to attend. Let us know and we’ll get whichever you want going to you.

If you have sent a check which has not been deposited, we will hold for your decision on whether to return it or credit it to another Appleseed. Just let us know...

If you know of anyone who is signed up or expected to come to this event, please help us get the word out by letting them know about the cancellation.

Once again, our apologies, and thanks

Hmm. Think they threatened them with the "Militia" charge, or something else?

SUGGEST BAKERSFIELD!! Seriously... we have "cannon day" at a local range where people bring in home made cannons. They shoot 50 cal and all kinds of stuff. Its only 1.5 hours drive too!

Thanks E. Pluribus, Bakerfield's not a bad idea. I think they are looking for a range with at least 100 yards where people can shoot high power rifles. Or if there was a piece of land where it's safe/legal to shoot. The Revolutionary War Veterans Assn. (RWVA) has put together a nationwide program to teach people to become "Riflemen". Anyone interested in mastering that skill can learn more at:

I personally would love to see the event rescheduled in a freedom-friendly part of our state.

You don't need the RWVA. Just start going to your local highpower matches.

Earlier thread discussing RWVA pull out.

Just what kind of event was this? The reason I ask is because their name is "Revolutionary War Veterans Assn" and would assume they are shooting guns of that nature. So as far as CA goes, just who, what, and where got canceled? What are the full details? I would like to get the NRA involved if that is the case!

There are plenty of organized .50BMG shoots within Los Angeles limits on a monthly basis and it is never blocked, so without additional details, a part of me wants to call BS on the nature of blame that Los Angeles or a CA entity canceling anything event-wise with a "Revolutionary War Veterans Assn" unless it was due to other reasons having nothing to do with firearms, such as filing permits, scheduling, use of some facilties, etc. And I don't get the "paramilitary/milita" excuse either. Any shooting event could be deemed as such, or even any Revolutionary/Civil War/Spanish War re-enactment group. Hell, a gun show could be deemed as such if they go under that guise (except for the beenie babies/pigeon jerkey militia).

Now if it was because they wanted to do it on county property, and they were blocked, such as the reason why there is no longer the Pomona Fairgrounds gun show, yes, that IS wrong, and extremely irritating, but without details, I wonder if the "it's because it is CA" excuse is being used when really there are other factors at work having nothing to do with CA.

Understand, I am not making accusations - just wondering the who, what, where and why of how this event was canceled - beyond "because it's California".

That sucks. Even in strongly anti-gun City of L.A., every 4th of July weekend they have re-enactments and a cannon shoot at Fort MacArthur (which is City property) down in San Pedro. And I would think the Saugus/Newhall/Santa Clarita area is a lot less liberal than L.A. City.
