The M1A scout, to me, is a dual purpose rifle. It serves as a battle rifle but really has the potential to reach out further too. I want an optic that reflects this. Maybe starts at 1x but goes a little higher than 4x like that leupold tactical scope. Maybe 1-5 or hopefully more. Preferably something in the $500 range. No more than $1000. Ideas????

I really like the swfa 3-9x and the price is right. I just wish it was a 1-6x instead :(

Any input would be appreciated!!!

I had an Aimpoint CompML on mine about 10 years ago. It was great up to about 200 yards, beyond that the dot obscured the target. The newer Aimpoints have smaller dots and I would think even a Micro would be good forward mounted on a Scout. The obvious disadvantage is you get no magnification, but M1As aren't precision rifles anyway so I would think that combo would be good to 400-500 yards.

I spent a lot of time and money trying to accurize mine down from 3MOA to 1MOA without much luck. I replaced the Aimpoint with a Leupold Scout 2.5x fixed power long eye-relief scope mounted on the forward rail. While not as fast up close as the Aimpoint, this combo made the farther shots much easier. If the rifle was capable of sub-2MOA groups I would have kept that particular combo.

Leupold 1.5-5x20 MR/T with tactical turrets (not the kind that stick up high) and it has a great BDC reticle thats really usable. This would be great for a scout gun type of setup. I've used one on an AR and the optics are great, rugged, warranted for life to my knowledge, and all in all just a great scope.

The only problem is you need a long eye-relief optic if you want to mount it on the forward rail. Mounting on the receiver is a whole other level of annoyance.

Here's one 1-6X illuminated combat scope for your price range.

However, the only "proven" 1-6X scope I know is the $2200+ Swarovski Z6i. Non-illuminated version is around $1800.

Meopta 1-4x22 scope. This is a great scope with the throw lever and all

Also Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24. Proven reliability, 4" of eye relief which should be enough especially if you mounted it in an offset mount from your scope rail in something like an american defense mount. a lot of guys will mount them backwards so its further back toward them for this reason. This one is only about $500 which gives you the extra $160 for the nice scope mount which is a QD mount btw, and would be the best of both worlds. If the scope ever failed, quickly flip the thing off and use your irons.

This but the way it is offset, you would use to your advantage to take care of the eye relief and make it perfect. I LOVED my American Defense mount when I had it. One of the best buys I ever made.
