Hey all,

After much deliberation, I decided to not get an AR15 and instead get a .22 to have some cheap fun with. I'm looking at either upgrading my 10/22 or getting a new .22 for plinking and hunting ground squirrels.

I think I have it narrowed down to the Savage Mark II line. Either the BRJ or BTVS, or upgrading my 10/22.

A local shop has the Savages for $420 and $400, respectively.

For the 10/22, I figure a Hogue stock, heavy barrel(TacSol, VQ, or maybe GM), and other small parts(scope rail, trigger parts, etc) for the 10/22 will be between $350-$450, so around the same price.

I do like bolt actions, I have an old Mossberg M42 that is fun and accurate, but I wouldn't mind having a nice modern .22.

I'm leaning toward the Savages, they just seem like a better platform for what I want, but since I already own the 10/22, maybe thats a better choice to build from.

Just wanted to see what opinions you guys(and gals) had.
Thanks!

I use my 10-22 as a plinker gun
If I am going for accuracy I break out one of my CZ's

I would suggest looking into CZ's
but no matter what you choose, check out Rimfirecentral.com

My Savage Mark II BTVS has yet to disappoint me. It still out-shoots me, and is very enjoyable to shoot. The accutrigger, in my honest opinion, is amazing. Some love it, some hate it. It is a fairly heavy rifle if you plan ro be shooting while standing, but not overbearingly. I'd suggest the Mark II if you are looking for a precision shooter. If you are preferential towards semi-auto, build up that 10/22 with an excellent (read: do not cheap out on) trigger, and a nice bull barrel.

One more thought for you... The Savage factory mags for the Mark II are kinda pricey, and can be a pain in the arse.

I just recently did a bunch of upgrades to my 10/22 and am SO happy that I did.

1) Tactical Solutions Barrel — So lightweight and accurate. Less than 1 lb.
2) Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot — Cheap and very accurate. $30 Rebate right now too.
3) Rimfire Technologies Hammer/Sear, Trigger and Charging Handle — The entire action is like butter now.
4) Chamfered my stock bolt to ride more smoothly over the hammer — Big difference, it doesn't feel like 2 stages when charging.

I love this thing so much more now and it's a shooter. 4"-6" circles at 100 yards off hand.

I say upgrade. I had a lot of fun tricking out my 10/22. It was my first time upgrading any of my firearms.

This is my last 22 build and yes I wear a full ninja outfit when I take it out. :p
Tacsol barrel and trigger work are the major tweeks everything else is just ninja makeup.
But all kidding aside the TacSol barrel is light as feather compared to an all steel barrel.
