In the AR flavor....I'm torn between a RRA Varmint upper or something like a J&T or ...<gasp> Model 1. What say you?

I have been really pleased with my RRA varmint 20" upper. I don't think you will go wrong there, especially for the few extra dollars.

I say consider the Model 1 - I think their reputation of poor quality is undeserved. I have a model 1 16" SS bull barrel upper and I think it is a fine upper for the price.

This upper is ideally suited for the small game or varmint hunter or even the informal target shooter. The 1-7 twist barrel is machined to W.O.A. specifications and will perform well with a wide variety of bullet weights. The optional spiral fluting helps to reduce weight while the black White Oak Precision custom varmint float tube is ventilated to help cool the barrel. A front sling swivel stud is provided for mounting a sling or a bipod. Click HERE to see camo versions.

Only $590

AVAILABLE OPTIONS:
·For 22" or 24" barrel add $20; 26" barrel add $30
·Spiral fluting - temporarily unavailable
·Slower twist barrels will be available in the future

CAMOFLAGING - Choice of Mossy Oak Breakup or Real Tree Hardwoods
·For Receiver, Float tube, charging handle- add $90.00
·For COMPLETE UPPER (incl. manifold and barrel) - add $175.00

White Oak?
Model1?

This is even a valid comparison?? A quality special boutique rifle shop vs. bottom feeder who ships outta spec parts...

White Oak. Or look at Bushmaster, too...

J&T and Del-Ton have the best reputation of the no-name vendors for both parts quality. Model 1 is generally dinged on their LPKs, but most people are happy with their uppers. None of the no-names have great resale value.

If you go to ar15.com and search the build-it forum on these companies, the consensus is pretty clear.

Here are some recent threads:

The White Oak is clearly a superior piece of gear, and it's also $100 more. It's going to have a better resale value if you were to get rid of it later.

Personally, if you can spring for the extra, I think it's a good idea, but if bucks are tight, any of those 3 are going to be fine.

There seems to be so many factors when choosing a certain brand/manufacture of barrels.
Your most important question should be how valuable is accuracy to you? Doesnt chrome lining merely add barrel life, it generally regarded as NOT an enhancement to accuracy? Isnt it true in the 223 cal, 18 " is more then enough barrel to properly stabalize the bullet, and provide a decent amount of accuracy.. There seems to be a dimenishing returns when you start going longer.. Longer in a full heavy adds weight and length.. Great if you will not carry far in the field. Full heavys certaily aid in a reduction of heat over long strings, how fast do you want to shoot?... I undertsand your question was relativly simple... I felt the need to add to this thread with the above since it seemed you were interested in a upper type which usually is associated with a higer degree of accuracy..

DPMS for best value with a reputable name behind it. Most companys use the same barrels anyway.

I got one of the cheepo dpms 24" with no dust door and no forward assist. I fallowed proper break in and get under 1" at 100 yards with walmart ammo all day long and it eats whatever you feed it

about $450 at midway

To original post:

To compare between RRA and Model1, the choice is clear; get RRA. The Model1 stuff is OK, but it's bottom-feeder.

I'd say "get an RRA".

Besides, DPMS, STAG and LMT are also good. Do some research.

Or, ever consider to build your own? Just get a quallity BBL, upper receiver and a cool forearm, you are good to go.:)

I ordered a RRA from Wes the other day and I got an e-mail saying it would be delivered today. I chose RRA for their reputation and because they had a huge selection. I'll let you know how it works out.

P.S. I ordered my upper from Wes and got it for the same price that RRA was selling it for. I saved some money on shipping since I was ordering my LPK, butt stock, and mag lock from tenpercent firearms too. I was suprised at how fast my order was processed and shipped. Thanks Wes.
