Who is going to make this gun for you?

If it can chamber and fire ammo,I'm sure the State and Federal Govts. would consider it a handgun.

Are you willing to pay thousands of dollars for someone to design, engineer, machine, and tool up for a one off custom replica?

If you're talking about converting a prop gun or something, I would think this would be legal like using a 80% lower, as long as you went through a single shot stage just like any homebuilt semi auto pistol. That said, it sounds like a very bad idea to convert a prop gun or airsoft to fire actual cartridges. (If this is what you're proposing.)

why is it a bad idea?

Really? Prop guns are not made from the same materials or to the same tolerances as real guns, because they aren't meant to endure the same stresses. I would think at a minimum you'd need most of the parts for a Sig to convert it, and it would be dangerous and probably not work. If you think you would be happy with a Sig, you will most likely not be happy with your homemade hand grenade.

Just to clarify, YOU can make your own handgun frame from an 80% or less finished frame or raw materials. You can use commercial barrel, slide, small parts, etc. Anyone other than an 07FFL can NOT make a gun for you.

The SIG P229 is almost the same as the P228 except for the slide material.
You can get one for about $850.

If you just love the way the SIG design looks, but you're on a budget. You can get the SP2022 for about $400. From what I've heard, it is a great handgun and the price is one of the best deals in modern pistols right now. I've read that it lives up to the SIG line. It just has a polymer frame (so does Glock, S&W M&P, H&K, Springfield XD, etc).

Oh your OP said P228.

The last P220 Sport I saw on here sold for $1600 used.
Sometimes you can find the bolt on compensator by itself, but it will only fit on the older P220STs that have the old style rails.

Basically, whether you get one that way or have one machined for a normal SIG as a one off, it is probably going to be pricey.

Keep in mind that, while it may be technically legal to build your own firearm, if there is something legally preventing you from purchasing a real firearm from a licensed dealer then it is also illegal for you to make one.

Probably more cost effective for you to get a 2022 and then find a compensator that looks similar or have one machined that looks the same.

Save your money and buy the real deal. You won't regrest it in the end.

you can also buy a FIRST GENERATION P220 ST.

the first gen 220 ST used the SPORT frame and hence that non standard/milspec rails. the rails are for that front end compensator thingee.

i have a first gen 220ST. and i missed out on buying the compensator when brownells (IIRC) was dumping them for less than $100.

then buy a barrel and wham... your own 220 SPORT...

There is a P220 Sport on GB right now for $1295. It is in FL so you will need to do a SSE on it. Check with any of the dealers in the SSE thread (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=383692) and see if they can do it for you.
