I picked up a big piece of 3/8" diamond plated steel. Thought it can withstand a 5.56 round? But then i heard it will cut through like butter... will be shooting m193 (5.56). no steel core.. 3/8" be able to hold it?

thanks

Nope, 5.56 will punch right through it. But what the heck, make a smiley face in it then weld up the holes and take'em back out.

Even if you buy thick stuff it will put huge splashes in it. I had a piece of 7/8" and PMC bronze 223 tears it up at 100yds. It's not necessarily the thickness that saves it, its the heat treatment ie AR rated steel. Check out Ironman5669's stuff he sells. Buy once and cry once. a good piece of 3/8" AR500 steel will last you a LONG time.

I have 3/8" steel posts and the entry holes look like they didn't slow the projectile down. A green tip .223 penetrated 2" deep into a 4" solid aluminum block where a .308 only went 3/4".

308 steelcore? It sounds like 308 huntin rounds thats why only .75" of penetration.
Heck for what its worth, i shot 68-77gr otms into 1" thick T6061 alum and all penetrated.

Aluminum block was set on ground with no back support.
Re-measured, .223 green tip penetrated to 1 1/2" in the aluminum.

.308 FMJ didn't go too deep, frangible did way more damage.

Edit: .308 in both FMJ hunting round and steel core. Steel core was from a 91/30 and frangible from a 1919A4.

16" AR w/ 55Gr FMJ @ ~125 Yrds .
Sure makes a satisfying "Smack" sound when hit. :D

Use 7/16" D-2 tool steel heat treated to 62c rockwell. Diamond plate is like aluminum foil in the hardness world.
