View Full Version : Thank you for my ARs

09-27-2011, 6:10 PM
about 2 weeks ago i've asked for advices on putting together a long barrel AR, knowing absolutely nothing. but just after a week's time with your feedback and with a crash course in reading everything i could about parts, manufacturers, and assembly i finally managed enough wits to start a project of my own. and the most prominent observation out of this whole process was the realization of how much the final results have deviated in style (and cost!) from the simplicity of my initial vision.

and so from the wealth of information all soaked in and with the momentum i was going, one project led to two...

Top (no intention to mimic the original SPR):
BCM SPR MK12 Mod0 upper group
Spikes lower with PSA parts and MIAD grip
Magpul PRS stock
Nightforce 3.5-15x50mm scope
Harris bipod

BCM 16" Recce mid-length upper group
Spikes lower with PSA parts and MIAD grip
Vltor EMOD stock
Eotech 517 plus 3x magnifier
Magpul angled grip

3rd project in the works but i really need to save for my next DSLR.

thank you forum. :p

Awesome builds congrats! I like the bottom one it's similar to a build of my own. You definitely have black rifle disease :)

Nice two great rifles. All in two weeks of reading... good job man.

thx guys.

yeah putting these together yielded tons of other building options - color was definitely something i do not want to touch on just yet, lol. but now i'm thinking forest green, hmm.

sheez man. You should insure those things now

09-27-2011, 8:53 PM
yeah i hope to get them out soon, still waiting on some pmags for the 16" and some ammo.

hmm, never thought about insuring these - what if my premium skyrockets when the provider is scared off by them? j/k

You did very well building your first rifles.

How much did you spend building the two?

09-28-2011, 10:36 AM
Nice, just switch the PWS for OPS INC collar and brake.

09-28-2011, 5:21 PM
Impressive builds!

That PRS will help balance out the rifle as far as weight distribution goes and that Nightforce scope will be more than enough for either rifle.

The 2nd rifle would be fun to take to a shooting class or competition.

Bad *** build... ull get hooked even harder now.....

09-28-2011, 7:42 PM
Awesome! Good job!!!

I'm digging that SPR. I have a lower I assembled that I'm thinking of building it up as an SPR.

09-28-2011, 7:53 PM
Nice builds! Beautiful rifles. :)

09-28-2011, 10:58 PM
thx for all the comments... yeah i was going for a separate short and long range of each rifle. the PRS stock definitely provides some beneficial weight to the rear end of the build. funny the OPS INC collar was mentioned - i really intended to get that first but it was out of stock at BCM and i didn't bother to wait and risk having the upper group going out of stock as well. as some of you may already know, when things are not available on their site they may take forever to restock.

the building experience was amazing, fun as heck. too bad i don't have much space for tools else i may tackle building the upper group as well some day. my 3rd lower is sitting here and i'm contemplating on a 24" barrel, just for kicks. speaking of going long, the .308 looks increasingly enticing right now - definitely caught the feva..!

to answer the cost question, everything you see there totaled a bit over $7k with all the parts and accessories. btw, i'm really impressed with Magpul, they make some pretty clever and innovative stuff. oh and their complimentary stickers are cool. :)

Wow i'm impressed, nice setup on both! congrats!

:drool5: Range report on that MK0?!?!

here's the range report from last weekend. should've ordered a larger rifle bag so i could fit both rifles in, hence only the SPRish was tested this time. overall the rifle handled great, felt extremely sturdy and responsive. i loved the weight which helped tame some recoil and reinforce a sense of quality and confidence.

at the range i was a bit too stoked to follow proper etiquette - did not bore-sight or anything, just fired and hope to see where my shots landed. ended up burning through almost 2 boxes of 556 Federal before i finally hit paper, lol (shouldn't have played with the scope too much before the range too). but after the first contact, i managed to lock center after 3 follow up shots.

here's a sample of the final rounds at 100yrds shot at the end of the day. a bit tired by then, but the groups seem consistent. i hope to improve my breathing pattern and achieve tighter groups. :chris:

Very Nice!

Nice build bro, and congrats!

There was some tool at the rifle range this past Sunday who had an exact rifle like that. Pssssh. I wasn't impressed by the rifle or the shooter. And the people he was with were even more annoying....

j/k, it was fun shooting your "SPR" on Sunday. Becky had a blast, despite her initial trepidation. Didn't even know you had another brand new AR at home. Are there longer distance ranges up there? And you need to shoot your irons!

10-05-2011, 3:49 PM
lol! thx man, good to see ya here. ;)

yeah it was a fun day at the range, 4hrs passed quickly. we barely had enough time to pull in a few last-minute sessions with our pistols and Gatorade bottles. 100yrds is the farthest they got i think, would love to try a range of 200-300yrds some place else, after i get better with the groupings.

my other rifle has a red dot for closer range, looking forward to testing it out next. and yes, definitely with iron sights as well.
