Hey guys... have been all over the net looking for an answer to this. Anyone know the muzzle velocity out of a Remington 700 SPS Tactical with 20" barrel... shooting Federal Gold Medal Match .308 168 BTHP?

That is very specific information you are looking for. General rule, minus 100fps for every 1" of barrel shorter.
I know this is not exact, but close.

Thanks Thai, I know it's specific... but I'm hoping someone chrono'd this info. :)

100 fps seems a bit high though... i thought it would be 20 fps per 1" at these velocities?

Maybe I should buy a chrono... anyone know of an accurate one that is priced decently? :)

For anyone that wants to know... i found that it is about 100-109 fps drop from the standard 24" barrel to a 20".

2620 fps from my 22" barrel a few weeks ago.

Every rifle is different.

Chrono it, if its that important.

Why do you want to know out of curiosity.

Thanks DirtRacer.

21SF, just trying to input some data into my ballistic calculator for a new rifle. :) Doesn't have to be right on, just close enough to hit.

No problem. I'm very confident in that number too for my 22" barrel and FGMM 168S.I have found that chronos are never are as accurate as real dope. Since we already have the G7 for the 168smk and I have a kestrel with the correct atmosphere I just gather dope out to 1k. You can input all variables into your calculator and tweak the velocity until it matches your hard dope. Now I save that velocity for that ammo profile and all that will ever change is atmosphere. Works much better then a chrono for me but if your going for first round hits with untested loads to impress the ladies you will have to wait until the next time you go shoot. ;)

What?!?? That's just wrong.

So your saying I lose 600fps at the muzzle because I use a 20" barrel?

It's more like 10 to 20 fps. And op you can't go off just the barrel the tighter the chamber is the higher pressures you will get from factory ammo. And with factory chambers the tollerances are huge some have tight chambers and some have lose reason when people reload some people see pressure signs at 44.5 gr and some see no pressure signs at 47.5 gr with the same load mix.

It's probably best to get a chrono if your serious if your just wondering for the he'll of it it doesn't really matter that much.

Go to www.jbmballistics.com they have good calculators that are just about spot on and I think have a fps calculator.

Hehe thanks CK. I'm aware every rifle is different, and tolerances are different... but I had to start somewhere. :)

I use BulletFlight by Knights Armament. I believe it's based on JBM.
