View Full Version : My next build- LR308

I've got some of the parts already-
DPMS LR308 flat top upper, 18" free floated bull barrel
DPMS LR308 Collapsible stock
Leupold VXL scope
TM 10 anodized 80% lower
Now some questions. Scope rings- which? Std, High, or Super High? Bipod? I think I may be able to mount one on the handguard. Sights? Will AR15 sights work? Bullet Button? Will an AR 15 BB work?

Rings... depends on the optic you get. Bi pod is personal prefrence. AR15 sights and bb work perfectly. I love my jd lr308, good luck on your build

I've been looking at scope rings, they say med, high, and super high, but no dimensions.

I think you need the extra high rings, like an AR15 would. The receiver might be long enough that you don't need to bridge the gap between the upper and handguard with the front ring and that would be good.

There is a calgunner that made a page comparing all of the one piece mounts for ARs I think his screen name is maxicon or something. He has good information on the dimensions you will need for proper scope height and eye relief.

I don't have a link but it's out there.

I ordered some medium rings. The VXL has a reverse curve on the bottom of the objective lens end. Now I'm thinking that with an 18" barrel, maybe I should use an Eotech or Aimpoint, and use the VXL on my M1A? Any suggestions? I'm new to optics, I'm 51, and my eyesight is not what it was.

Do yourself a favor and mount the Leupold on the LR308. These rifles are (out of the box) capable of sub-moa groups. I have several M1As and a few more LR308 design rifles and the accuracy nod goes to the LR308. A standard M1A is a 1 1/2" battle rifle (on a good day) and sometimes worse. A $3,000 super match will get you down to the 1" area, but a $1200 LR308 will get you better than that. Putting a red dot or Eotech on one limits it to a 100 or less meter shooter. The ammo is too expensive on a .308 to waste it with a 4moa dot sight.
The 50mm scopes usually require a high or xhigh ring or the objective won't clear. Go to Midway or Leupold web sights and they give the ring height in inches. Hold your scope on the receiver/barrel assembly and see how much height you need to clear the handguard.
AR15 sights and the regular bullet button work on the CMMG, JD and POF lowers. I have those, but I'm familiar with your lower.
