View Full Version : 10.5 upper question

Not sure if this should be here or in handguns.. here makes a bit more sense.

I want to build a 10.5 upper for my AR pistol.. Why? So that it will be built when I move out of state and get my SBR paperwork..

I'm finding there arn't many options.. BCM sells a TON of uppers, but only two in the 10.5" size and both have full front sights.

Example:
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/LMT-10-5-M4-Carbine-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/lmt%2010.5%20urg.htm

So I would have to buy this and then swap to a low profile gas block so I can run the 9" VTAC TRX handguard...

Seems like a pain. Thoughts? Anyone know of a good to go 10.5 upper like I'm looking for.. I want good stuff (MP, 1.7:1, etc)..

Or I could go 11.5 (lots of choices at BCM) but it sort of defeats the purpose of getting the SBR deal a bit. Is there a reason there are a ton of 11.5 and few 10.5 uppers? DI gas problems with 10.5?

Why BCM chose the 11.5" over the 10.5" (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_138/174764_.html)

essentially, the 11.5" has more dwell time adding to the overall reliability. Plus you get the added velocity from the extra 1". IMO, the 11.5" is a great compromise between 10.5" and 12.5".

ETA: If you decide to go with the 11.5" instead, go for the Kino setup from BCM; this will allow you to run a 9" handguard while retaining the FSB. best of both worlds.

Check out Lmt, their 10.5 upper is used on the mk18 used by special forces and if u hunt for one you can get a good deal. I paid 375 for one about a year ago

That's my shop of choice.. but I don't see any uppers, or even barrels, listed on thier site shorter than 14.5"

Thanks for the info.. reliability is more important than the 1" drop in length.. still, I would rather not have the FSB (and run a flip TROY).. the 11.5" is a problem since they don't yet make a 10" VTAC TRX... I think running the 11" TRX on a 11.5" barrel might look funny..

Are you looking for 10.5" only or 10.3" as well? I know some companies only make one or the other.

To be honest I've never heard of a 10.3".. not that critical.. open to 10-12"

I have dreams and aspirations of moving to a free state where I can SBR my AR and my PS90.. maybe even cans..

I know, it's crazy talk, but it keeps me sane.

Just because it's not on the web site doesn't mean they can't or won't get it for you.

They have access to everything that DD, Noveske, and LMT offer.

True.

You could always go with the URX II on an 11.5" for total wow factor...

While probably a little longer than most would go with for an SBR, my ideal setup will be a 12.5" barrel with FSP rail:

I know what you mean. I'd love to have a suppressed MK18 like this one:

I'm going that route, finally got around to mailing off the paperwork this past Friday. I didn't want the FSP though, I've got an 11" LaRue rail and a 12.5" SS Noveske barrel on hold pending my stamp. Can't wait. But I'll have to, the current turn around is 4-5 months.
