I bought some ammo today and asked the guy for a 100 rounds of 223 and I didn't realize till later that the boxes said 556. I called them and they told me 556 is the same and that they dont do refunds on ammo. I already know the answer to this question but I am going to ask anyway and take the abuse.

With a 5.56 barrel you can shoot 5.56 and .223

With a .223 DO NOT shoot 5.56, shoot only .223, plenty of info online.

Go back and exchange the 5.56 with .223. Tell them you specified .223 but they gave you 5.56 instead; the two are not interchangeable.

If they will exchange it, exchange it. But dont shoot it out of a .223.

This is the big reasion I make sure all my guns that use that cartridge are rated for 5.56, if I accidently get .223 it wont hurt anything.

Guys a Saiga will shoot 5.56mm no problem.

And if the store doesn't take returns, that is there policy. That is their choice not anyone else's.

It's an AK. 5.56 would work fine.

Got 2,950 rounds of 5.56 thru a 223 stamped receiver and not a single jam.
Stamped 223 for import reasons.

Maybe alittle off topic. But why not buy Russian 223?

What's the going rate nowadays? 1000rds for $200?

cause if he is in socal, most outdoor ranges won't let you shoot the bi-metal russian ammo.

I shoot 5.56mm all day long through my Saiga .223. Just between you and me I shoot it in my bolt action .223 rifle too. Been doing it since 1985.

Saiga chambers them as 5.56 but stamps .223 remi on their receivers. Steyr did the same thing back in the day.

^^^^^^^/thread. The barrel is stamped .223 so that they can enter the country in a sporting configuration, key word...sporting. 5.56x45 is a military round and not very sporting, but .223 on the other hand is . If you find a Saiga stamped 5.56x45 buy it, it's worth some money.

223 on a 556 yes.

"Hay guise, guise I hav a 308 but the gun shoppe saled me 7.62 NATO boolits. Guise, can I shot these boolits or will my guns blow up? I am going too do it either way but I wanted to ask all your oppinions first. I think I know it is not the right thing, but it is what I have and I rally want to go shot it this weakend."

Sorry OP, your post was nothing like that grammatically, but after a dozen of these threads a month it gets old. You are good to go, so go shoot your Saiga and have fun. However, if for some reason you're worried, I guarantee you that you can find some guy in the for sale forum who will trade you his .223 ammo for your 5.56 ammo because he wants to kill the paper targets even deader with his AR next time he goes to the 25 yard range. You can probably even get an extra box out of the trade since you have the better ammo of the two. ;)

I think some people just hit "post reply" after reading the OP, but nothing else. Its a bit of a pet peeve of mine, way more than spelling, which I dont give a **** about if I can read the post.

Always consult your firearms manual or the fun manufacturer for their recommendations. Many rifles will shoot both .223/5.56 just as many will shoot .308/ 7.62 x 54.... Don't just take people's word for it... Check with your manufacturer or owner's manual...

This is NOT always true. The manual for my Mini 14 Target says I can shoot 5.56. This is INCORRECT! The Mini 14 Target IS chambered for .223, unlike all the Ranch models. I confirmed this mistake with Ruger.

Know what your rifle is chambered for or ask. Better safe than sorry.

I think you mean 7.62 x 51;)

relax friend, Uncle K designed this rifle, and it will shoot whatever you can fit inside that chamber.
