The Bulgarian 54R Heavy Ball is good ammo. The Light Ball in the 300 round tins are supposed to be good also. The Light Ball in the 250 round tins have some issues. The latest batch has been imported by Century International which has probably the cheapest shipping.
Hungarian Light and Heavy Ball has its following as is good. Czech is also good stuff but sticks if your chambers are not clean.
Ammo to Go
Can handle your 54R ammo needs.
The Hungarian works well in my m38 but not in my m44, it also lacks the big fireball mosins are known for. I've tried a few other countries and my favorite is Albanian, too bad I'm almost out of it and can't find anymore.

I like the czech light ball ammo. shoots point of aim in my m44's albanian must be a bit hotter because it shoots high.

I would reccomend staying away from steel cased ammo. Especially if your mosin is well warn. The case will expand and be harder to extract if your mosin is plinker quality.

I've never had trouble with steel-cased ammo in my Mosin. It's usually a dirty chamber causing the problems if you do...
It's nearly impossible to stay away from steel cases, since probably half the ammo I've found out there is steel cased. You've got lacquered and copper-washed steel cases (which look kind of like brass, till you get a magnet out), even in commercial ammo. Even more prevalent in surplus, though.
My 91/30s like the heavy ball. The M44s and M38s like the Albanian.

My 91/30 seems to shoot better with the heavy ammo. Yellow tip heavy for plinking, 200 grain soft points for other stuff.
