I would like to help my mom figure out what gun she is talking about. She says she worked in a store in 1970 and sold guns. From what I was told she said it was a Smith & Wesson "midnight special". I have not been able to find anything about this weapon. She said it was a revolver and from her description was blued. Se said it did not have a wooden grip. She also said that it was carried by police during that time. She does not remember what caliber.

While this is very vague I'm hoping someone can help me flesh this one out.

Probably just a blued Chiefs Special, model 36.

from my experience a 'midnight special' generally refers to a pocket gun 22/25 caliber, had for 20 bucks on the streets.
or, could be same type of small gun, made by smith & wesson, but then its called a 'gentlemens gun'

I know those to be called "Saturday Night Specials".

S&W had a run of 686s back in the early 80's that were stainless steel but finished in something called "midnight black" a matte deep black finish. Perhaps that's what she's thinking of.
I'll check the SCOSW and get back to you.
