View Full Version : Your must have AR parts

Having been in the AR game since the mid 80's, when your selection of stocks was basically an A1 or A2, sights were carry handle only, slings were usgi, and handguards were triangular or round, it's amazing the amount of choices we have today. That being said, I thought it would be interesting, and perhaps informational to those new to the platform, what your absolute must haves are on an AR style rifle.

For me, they must have the following-

Stock- LMT Sopmod. Tried a bunch, this ones the ****e for me.

Grip- Ergo suregrip. Again, tried the magpuls, A2, tango's etc, and for me, it's the Ergo that wins.

Magpul enhanced trigger guard. Prefer the aluminum one, but the polymer is just fine. Smooth edges, fills the gap in the back by the grip, and just "looks right" on the gun. I don't shoot with mittens, so the usgi swingdown feature isn't needed by me.

Vltor/BCM charging handle, medium latch. Stronger and easier to manipulate left handed left sided while maintaining strong side right grip. Just switched to these this year.

Sights. I really like shooting open sights. Even though I run a variety of optics, I always shoot some with the sights every outing.
If I must run a flip up style because of a magnified optic or a red dot magnifier, then it's the KAC 200-600 flip ups all the way for me.
For anything else, I prefer the LMT cut down carry handle A2 style when running a red dot alone. The red dot will be on a riser for lower 1/3rd cowitness. On my basic kiss M4 clone, I run a standard removable carry handle sight.

Those are my must haves on an AR style rifle. Not saying they are the best, or most milspec, or tier whatever. Just sharing what I have found works best for me. Would love to hear yours, as you never know, I may change my mind, and we may help out someone new. :)

Mine are simple, just good parts and a sweet shooting complete rifle. All the manufactures out there today want you to believe they have the super duper piece of the month and without it your bound to fail. My issue M-16A1 in 1970 worked just fine and another built just like it would do the same exact same thing without all the fancy gadgets around today. PUT LEAD down range at what ever it is your aiming at. Pretty much as accurate as any used today.

BCM gunfighter medium
O-ring, enhanced extractor spring and insert.

That is about it. Other than that, I buy quality parts and don't stress about it. Those are the only two items that I consider to be "must have" on anything other than a range rifle. I like other odds and ends, but they are more or a "want".

BAD lever (various brands), Pmags (MAGPUL), and an extended charging handle latch, my favorite is the blackrain $14 upgrade. see below.

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to see. I'm running reliable rifles, that's a given. For the basic reason that I don't like things that don't work. Nothing is 100%, but mine have been so far. I was thinking more along the lines of replacement parts. Example- I shot a basic m4 stock for quite a while. Once I discovered the LMT, I won't use anything else.
Seems a lot of us like the BCM charging handles too.

So far the only really must-have for me seems to be the LMT version of the Ergo Grip. I like to have a nice solid stock, but I don't need anything fancy, so I just buy the LMT M4 stocks. They are like the SOPMOD in that they don't have any play in them when mounted on a milspec tube, but I'm also not a fan of the big fat stocks, so these serve me just fine at a fair price.

As I look at my rifles and lowers, those are the only consistent features among them.

I wish I could say I had a need to upgrade my charging handle, but I haven't had any problems using the standard one yet. That'll probably change after the first time I slip and sock myself in the nose.

Gunfighter CH and either a MOE or MIAD grip.
Im actually not to picky on PGs, just cant stand the A2. Considering Magpul grips are cheap, they fit the bill perfectly.

Very close to "must have" would be an AFG, but Im fine with a VFG or nothing at all..
Im also very fond of reflex sights (aimpoint or eo either way) but Im also comfortable with irons, esp since I have a strong affinity towards the way carry handle sights look on a AR platform

I only have one "must have" part, and that is an extra bolt. The rest is all personal preference.

Okay, guys, what's the benefit of these, beyond looking pretty? Do either of these coatings resist carbon fouling by an appreciable amount?
