View Full Version : Ready to take this thing to Angeles on Sunday...600 yards irons or bust

This is gonna be my go-to iron sights match gun.

Have only shot it out to about 300 yards on steel before upgrades and it was a consistent hitter. After upgrades it hit bowling pins at 150 yards pretty easily, although I sighted it high for about 300 yards.

Started life as an M1A Standard, now the receiver, oprod, and trigger are about the only things stock on the rifle.

All work was done by Ken Breda in Aptos, CA. Great smith, great work, good communication, and good turnaround time. Highly recommend him, this guy is an M1A/M14/M1 Garand specialist smith and knows the ins and outs of the system. If anything, this rifle is a testament to the quality of his workmanship, as you can see in the photographs. His prices are also unbeatable.

Turnaround was 2 weeks from ship out to rifle on my doorstep.

I miss my M1A so much. I was young and dumb and sold it for a dirt bike. regrets. have fun.

I shot mine, which he has done a bunch of work on, out to 800 yards with SMK handloads...you should have no problem connecting at 600 with good ammo and a decent shooter. Come-up 11-12 MOA from your 100 yard zero. :43:

pretty sweet. i am thinking of buying one myself

Wow... I need to do exactly that to mine.

What did all the extra's end up costing'ish?

sweet rifle. you must have NASA telescope eyes lol

I guess we'd have to break down the costs like this:

1. Springfield Armory M1A Standard
USGI Fiberglass stock

2. NM 308 medium barrel
Sadlak extended bolt release
4.5lb trigger
David Tubb oprod spring and hammer spring
Unitized SEI gas system

Now I received the rifle with 1+2 already implemented by the previous owner. I added step 3:

3. Reindex barrel to true alignment (Ken found out it was 3 degrees right, which accounts for the minor adjustment left I had to make) - $75
Headspaced barrel & throated chamber- Free
Order and install SEI NM rear sight (old sight was wobbly)- $225 (very reasonable since sight alone is listed for $200, plus he handfits them as well to ensure 0
movement within the base)
Shipping back and forth- $65
Competition sling- $65

So the $$$ I paid for upgrades was about $430 on top of total cost of rifle. Worth it though, the gun was a great shooter before I had the work I wanted done to it.

In terms of final worth, I'd say a reasonable market price would probably be around $2000 or so.

Good luck and you have a very good rifle indeed, I hope your target is bigger than your sight in 600 yards :P

Steel at angeles is about man-sized at 600 yards, so hopefully I can get that far.

400-500 should be doable.

300 is pretty easy, 200 is no trouble at all.

These are all just combat sized targets though, I don't think I could hit pie plates past like 200 yards.

Nice rifle and great photos, did you take them yourself?

If so, what gear/settings?

Photo credits go to the infamous jeffu

He used a Pentax DSLR w/ 50mm lens, external flash, white backdrop, and white umbrella lighting unit.

Looks like an awesome rifle and I think you will really enjoy it. When I shoot at 600 yards at ASR with iron sights I always shoot the big red circle - it's symmetrical and very visible :D If you have a buddy with a spotting scope to help you, you should be fine

Never wanted an M1A until 2 minutes ago. Beautiful rifle!

Heck with that, its too narrow. Beautiful tool, beautiful engineering, gorgeous piece of functional industrial artwork.

sweet rifle. you must have NASA telescope eyes lol

^^^Thats what I was thinking... I wish I had good enough vision to shoot 600 yards with iron sights.

Great news! I had no idea we had a M1A specialist in Aptos.
Thanks for the heads up.

Very nice rifle btw.
