Gobble, gobble! Just got the lower on gun broker. Maybe in a couple of months I might be able to save enough to buy the upper. Not cheap!

It was beautiful! I had to get out today because my daughter has a softball tournament in Stockton all weekend. Hit me up if you're out there sometime so you can see if it's worth the scratch for you.

Here's an obligatory crappy phone photo, I'll put more up when the Eotech comes in next month. I'm still shooting about 8" high (want to get that down to 6") at 25 yards with irons and forgot my sight adjustment tool ;P

How is the accuracy of a HK556? I have been planning to sell some of my rifles to get a AR piston. Thanks

You lose that allen tool, you can't take the rifle down nor adjust the stock? And no chrome lined barrel to boot.

starsnuffer

Chrome lined barrels are 1950s tech, the only reason the military uses them is because they wanted to get rid of surplus crappy powder in the 1960s.

The "allen tool" is just a pin pusher, you could use a toothpick or ballpoint pen, or whatever, or you can just replace the take down pins if you so chose. The stock works fine without the tool, the tool only works to lock the stock in position to eliminate the tiny little bit of play it has if it isn't locked. It's a 3mm allen wrench if I recall the size correctly.

Still has a longevity advantage, which is lost on 99% of civilians, who will never push their rifle that hard.

I really only care about it on Ak platofrms because of corrosive ammo though.
Outside of that I dont care either way.

Sure, people argue that you can get better accuracy out of various non-chrome lined bores, but Im not a precision shooter and I do not look at the AR platform as precision rifle to begin with (though some people can def make great things happen with them)

I agree MrPlink.

I plan on cleaning my rifle and I don't even know where to get corrosive ammo for it. I suppose if I was planning on a zombie invasion and needing a rifle with a bore that would survive some kind of acid atmosphere that my exposure to radiation due to ingesting irradiated zombie flesh made me able to breath, then a chrome lined bore would be something I would want, but I'm not planning on that situation. If I was, I think a lighter AR would be a better choice, but I digress.

I'm honestly hoping that the IAR contract will result in more barrels being available, and I may plan on re-profiling one, maybe even shortening it, definately lightening it. The MR556 barrel is the same profile as the IAR, and I don't plan on using the thing for suppressive fire, it could use a diet. I think that will address the lions share of the front heaviness, it really isn't the piston block, it's the barrel.

Sweet yours works when its dirty?? 2500 aint bad for that kind of reliability, oh wait, my 600$ delton could do that too... Hadda tap the forward assist for every first round in the mag too.

HKDoc

True, but the delton wouldn't get the same envious looks. And it doesn't have the cool letter on the receiver to tell you to read the manual!

I think hk will have to lower it's price. Reports from dealers on hkforums talked of a price increase to 2600 dealer price. I love the rifle but there is too much competition to get 2700 plus for one. Even at 2400 they aren't selling on gun broker.

starsnuffer
09-26-2011, 11:26 AM
I don't think HK will lower their price. Their bread and butter is from their defense contracts, and with the USMC ordering more IAR's and the recent G28 (HK417 marksman version )adoption I don't think they care if they sell more or less civilian versions or not. I think the LWRC's will come down in price now that they aren't getting any contracts with them so they have to sell to the unwashed masses.

I wish hk would be more like fn. They have sold civilian versions of all of their firearms. Would be too cool to shoot an mp7.

I agree!

HK got really spooked after the Federal assault weapon ban. From that you got bastardized cruddy versions of nice weapons like the SL8(G36) and USC (UMP).

The MR556 was the first rifle they released that they didn't handicap or otherwise "sporterize". I'm hoping the trend continues. I doubt they'll go back and give us the MP7 (hard to find 4.6 ammo anyway) or a "real" G36, but maybe the 556 and 762 will start a trend for them. I'm sure they'll always cost 3x more then what anyone wants to pay though.

I love the FN stuff too, almost pulled the trigger on the SCAR but held off, and may still get a 17 next year.

Even if hk follows Fn's model they still won't be cheap!

The scars are awesome rifles. Nice balance, not too front heavy and very smooth recoil. You wouldn't have gone wrong with either rifle.

Yes, I imagine an mp7 would run about 2k or more and each round would be 0.50 to 1.00$. But I would be willing to save up for one.
