View Full Version : What to get with 2k?

04_e46

The GF is giving me a 2k limit for my birthday. Don't really have anything set in stone yet but was looking into a Remington 700. Think I need some sort of long distance precision type of rifle/bolt action. Any members know another weapon I should look into that are similar to a Rem. 700? I would really like to only drop at least a grand, 1500 max on a complete combo (rifle/scope/bipod).

Hmmm, two grand.....

What kind of shooting do you like to do? Range limitations? Does she shoot?

A good model 700 with a good scope and nice trigger will be in your price range. It will be a great rifle for long range target shooting. I would always recommend. 308 for it's combination of great barrel life (5000 - 8000 rounds of match grade accuracy, compared to as little as 1000 rounds for some magnums), cheap match grade ammo, huge selection of ammo, mild recoil, mild muzzle blast (in reasonable length barrels) and proven ability to go beyond 1000 yards with good accuracy.

While I like to wear the pants, I also like when she takes hers off. Spending 2k on a rifle would keep them up for a while.

in this case not necessarily, she put the cap on it. if she put the limit to 2k then that means she is ok or comfortable with it. why would his purchase of a 2k rifle be an automatic cock block? she set the limit. not him. if it is his money or hers she put the limit at 2k, thus in my view she is ok with that decision and not going to anger her. unless she is playing mind games.

and if it is her $ then she is a great gal.

------and i was reading my post, and i feel i might have been rude with wearing the pants comment. i apologize for this. i didn't mean to be rude, but if it was my money then she would have to bud out of my financial choices. if it is my money imo like full clip stated, she would not have a say in it. especially if we are not married and not using $ that is for the both of us. just cuz she is my gal doesn't mean she runs my life, and her word is absolute.-----

$2000 will get you both a Remington 700 and three $500 hookers. There will be nothing suggested in this thread that you will be happier with.

For 2K I think you could get into a halfway decent long range .308 AR setup. You could probably stretch your dollars a little more if you went with a TM lower and a DPMS 24" bull barrel upper. Slap an A2 style stock on there and you'd probably have enough money left over for a decent piece of glass.

04 e46, go with a Remington 700 Varmint, change out the stock to an HS Precision like on the 700P model or any other stock that you can afford, get a good set of rings, a 20 MOA base, a scope, Harris bipod and call it a day. You can do all that with $2k.

IMO instead of focusing on value, pick something you truly want. If you get caught up in trying to maximize the $2k value, you might not end up with something you will really enjoy and hang onto. Maybe $2k won't get you the complete set-up that you're looking for (maybe it will), but if it can get you top shelf components to put toward your dream set up, I think that's better than trying to shoehorn as many items as possible into the budget. Whether you save up a bit to finish it down the line or contribute up front, I think you will be happier with the end result. Of course this depends on what you have currently etc. etc., but if my girlfriend had been so generous with my birthday gift, this is the approach I would have taken.

All I can say is do your research on what rifle you want and what you want on it. Some may have more feature then others so it's pretty much up on you on its worth for example, a remy sps v may be $600 compared to a remy 5r which is $1100 which has a better stock, bedded, better barrel and the barrel is free floated. Accuracy wise is almost comparable but is it worth spending the extra 500? All I can say is figure out what your gonna use the gun for and also don't skimp out on the glass which is a key part of your system and might even cost more then your rifle.

Haplo

Get a .308, but no optic, just iron sights. Then later spend around $2k on an optic.
Personally, I have a Noveske N6 upper (AR 10 pattern) on a custom lower, with US optics scope. I reckon the upper was around 1,800, lower another 500, optics another 2k.... It's ain't cheap but it's amazing!
oh and then there's ammo, match grade .308 is around $1/round and you'll want at least 250 :)

lol. some ppl forget that true men don't allow women to wear the pants in the relationship.

get a .338 lapua magnum savage- i think they cost 800 to 1200. nvr mind

get a ruger gunsite scout.

Typically it isn't a matter of allowing it or not. It is a matter of whether the resulting headache is worth it.

Congratulations. You just bought the most expensive ACOG in history.

Yeah, and wait until it goes to college...

Op, I know you were thinking more along the lines of a long range rifle but might I suggest something a little bit out of the norm? I want one of these next:

http://www.franklinarmory.com/PRODUCTS_XO-26.html

I've seen them for cheaper than 2k, and they're kind of a unique item, I think.

Just my $.02

Have fun with whatever you buy!

that's real nice..how much does that retail?

I think I was quoted ~$1600, but that was a while ago. It may have come down some since it's initial release.

Buy something expensive you don't need/want just because you have the money at the moment. Post if for sale on WTS in 3 months and let me send you low ball offers until you fold...:p

Don't forget the diapers!

The sig 516 looked good and you would have plenty of money for diapers, not optics.

Does she have a sister?

Been browsing around and thought of actually building a sniper style AR instead of the Remington 700...

20 mosin nagants from big 5

i vote for this. then turn your neighborhood into a organized militia. No one will mess with your block.

p.s. I have a 8 month old. Baby's really dont cost that much. Im still able to enjoy my hobbies while providing more than enough for my son. And I dont make a whole lot. At least, according to CA standards...

I vote an AR10 variant. You can pickup some optics later. Why get stuck with a slow and antiquated bolt gun when you can have a modern rifle? Unless you have SWAT Team Sniper duty on the weekends, a heavy bolt gun will gather dust quicker than any other gun in your safe. Their is a bolt gun like that sold in the Marketplace every month by Calgunners... all with the same story... "no time to shoot" What that really means is, "I thought if I bought a sniper rifle, It would be fun to shoot at the range... it's not!"

AR-10, Assuming you already have a carbine. If you want it to be really accurate, then go with a longer and heavier barrel (fluted, of course!).

I have decided that I'm going the ar10 route. Only reason is that my brother just picked up a remy 700 sps and there's no point of me having one also when it'll probably have the same set up and if anything i can always shoot his if i wanted to try/ have a feel for it. I also would like to use the ar10 for hunting (boar and/or deer), with that being said, the GF is nagging me about making a list of things I want for my birthday cause she decided to purchase the items for me instead of handing me 2K...So uhh where should i start? whats a good .308 barrel i should get my hands on for the type of platform im trying to achieve?
