EDIT: RANGE REPORT:

This thing is amazing! well worth the price tag!
I'll tell you I was a little aprehensive at first spending so much on a muzzle device when a standard A2 cage is like $10 and sure they've been working for forever

But after shooting this today, there is no way "standard" is good enough any more.
There is no comparison. Hammered tripples at 110 yards on a 6" target... NOT A PROBLEM - this will significantly speed up my follow up shots, it's like the sights don't even twitch.

It's not loud, and the people standing next to me told me it wasn't any different than the other ARs there that day, maybe a slightly different signature but not some crazy loud blast. Heck a guy next to me with a pistol AR had one of those KAC pigs - it was worse than mine (I let a couple people shoot it, they were amazed)

Installation was easy... the included shims time the device perfectly with the 22fts of torque. they include some sort of thread locker called rocksett and I don't think I'll ever get this thing off my gun. which is OK by me - the thing ROCKS

Quality - nothing short of what you would expect from surefire, if you know the name you already know it's good stuff.

where you shootin' that thing? indoor/outdoor? It's awesomely deafening at an indoor range. Best to let your neighbor know, lol.

More or less. It's a Rifle gas system with a 16" barrel. It's not like the bushmaster with a hidden gas block

You missed my full build thread did you? :(

HERE YA GO!

This pic is about 2 months old... now have a fixed rear sight, obviously new muzzle device and an MOE pistol grip (MIAD broke)
I also painted the gun tan... then scraped it all off and re-coated it black. LOL

I'll be shooting at spenceville - it's a DFG range and on tuesdays it's not at all crowded. I will see how it is, I plan to take it to the next carbine course I attend but I don't want to deafen people standing right next to me either. LOL

Awesome. I was looking at that brake as well. What kind of ammo were you using?

I think I have finally completed my rifle system: the whole point of my rifle was iron sights and low recoil - so the rifle gas system/short heavy barrel + this break is just pure sex

How does it compare to the Battle Comp?

say what? I own both and shot both out of the same carbine length rifle.

The surefire hands down handled recoil way better than the battlecomp.

How does it compare to the Battle Comp?

I couldn't tell you. I have never shot an AR with the battle comp. I can bet it's very nice considering it's popularity. But I chose the surefire of the battlecomp for a couple reasons:
1. I bought it locally. my two stores here don't carry the battlecomp. I went to sacramento black rifle.. they highly recommended the surefire and had experience with it. That's a seller for me
2. Surefire's reputation - the fact that it's used by our armed forces and it's proven
3. call me whatever, but the surefire looks 100x better than the battlecomp break. gotta look good while bustin zombies or whatever right? lol:chris:

I can tell your for sure that the MB55K more than exceeded my expectations. I have shot ARs with other muzzle brakes and I knew that while they reduced recoil.. I never thought I could triple tap a target at 110 yards with irons while standing... This combo flat out destroys anything I have ever shot

That is a nice looking rifle, sir.

I like the Surefire brake. It is, however insanely loud compared to a standard A2 when shooting indoors. Outdoors it only makes a difference to the people shooting next to you. Only reason I bought it was to tame the front end a little when shooting off the bench.

How does it compare to the Battle Comp?

I consider them to be apples and oranges with different applications. In this state, I would only run the Surefire muzzle brake for competition/recreation, and I would run the Battlecomp on a defensive gun. If, on the other hand, I could run a suppressor... that changes things!

This Surefire muzzle brake (and others like it) is designed to deliver maximum performance on reduction of recoil and muzzle jump. There's not really consideration given to concussion/blast, sound, or flash -- when you want to reduce those things you are supposed to attach your Surefire suppressor to it! :D

The Battlecomp was designed to be a happy medium between performance on recoil reduction and muzzle jump, moderate concussion, etc. It does that job admirably.

But to compare the two, pure muzzle brakes like the Surefire shoot noticeably flatter with less felt recoil. You should be able to see this in your split times when hosing and in your reticle with magnification at distance.

But while doing this, they generate significant side concussion and if you're anywhere near the deck there's going to be dust and debris flying. If you're in a structure (even an open ended one like in a 3-gun match), you'll feel it in your fillings! ;)

So in comparison to the opinions stated above, in my experience with lots of rounds downrange (as both shooter, RO, and just nearby) with both types of muzzle devices, I have found the concussion from muzzle brakes to be much worse than the OP did, and the performance (w.r.t. recoil/muzzle jump) from the Battlecomp to be noticeably not as effective as the muzzle brakes.

Everything's a trade off! You can't have your cake and eat it too!

I'm torn between this SureFire and the Battlecomp. I've never shot rifles with either, but I have shot using a AAC Brakeout, which I assume is similar to the SureFire. Recoil was noticeably reduced and it handled nicely, but i sat at the bench next to my buddy and dear lord, it was loud. I could handle it alright, but you can really feel that thing when its going off next to you. Now, I don't particularly want to draw the ire of my shooting neighbors, but I mean, these are guns we're talking about; sometimes they are loud. I'm not going to be clearing houses with Alpha team or something, but I suppose my rifle could one day take on a defensive role indoors. That isn't why I bought it, though. So I don't know... I'm leaning toward this SureFire, but everyone raves about the Battlecomps so its a tough decision.

honestly when I let others shoot my gun - I was standing right there. it wasn't loud - it did make me flinch because of the "blast" but it's not something that was over or above the guys on the other side of me shooting 300 win mag. I also did shoot from prone on a dirty surface - and yes... it made some dust! but it was cool - I felt like I was in a movie and I just kept blasting, imagining the scores of women that would be clawing their way to my balls when I stood up.
but I stood up and the only thing around my balls was dirt :(

Mission drives the gear! I am a big fan of different tools for different jobs.

Yes, the Brakeout is a nice muzzle brake and would be similar in feel to the Surefire. I haven't shot them back to back though.

Surefire is the best hands down! Don't believe the stuff that theirs is louder than somebody else's unless you use a gauge to register the footprint. I only use their brakes and love'm.

wow good lookin' rifle!
I have been thinking about going featureless now that I have this break - but I don't own any standard mags and I am already pretty good at mag chances with my g-pik anyway

Thanks :) I went featureless for competition reasons and becuase I was lucky enough to have a few pre ban mags. Whether you stick with a button or go featureless should depend on your intended use for the rifle. I have to say your rifle looks pretty damn good the way it is.

that may be

all I know for sure is that if you're looking for performance out of a muzzle brake - something that will do the BEST job at cutting down muzzle jump... the MB556k is what you want.
honestly - I am pretty new to the AR scene after building a couple myself and even though I've shot quite a few of them with different setups... I had no idea there was something on this planet that could make the already low recoil of my rifle gas AR seam like I was shooting an airsoft gun.
