Hey folks, ill be buying my first centerfire semiauto handgun in the next couple weeks.

I cant seem to decide between two great guns.

Rock Island 1911 Tactical model

or

Ruger P345

Both can be had for almost the same price...

Lets hear the opinions!

RIA 1911!!!! Hands down... even the GI model.

I had a p89, Great gun, but to bulky and clunky for my tastes. Also had a friend that has a p95, it was the same way.

My first handgun was a 1911 and I've been spoiled ever since. What do you intend the use to be?

Apples & oranges. The 1911 is SA only and the Ruger is DA/SA with decocker & manual safety, also mag disconnect.
The 345 also has a polymer frame.

So do you want the DA/SA platform or the SA only platform. That's the decision you really have to make.

For a range gun I would go 1911. For HD I already made the decision. I chose the Ruger P90 over the RIA simply because I wanted the DA first shot.

Range/plinker primary and second use is HD. I like both guns, but i dont have the kind of income that allows me to own both :/

It really depends on your purpose. For me, weight was a big issue, so I went with a p345. Unlike what others have described it...this is a newer model and not clunky(like other p series), 29oz unloaded. Very compact and light for my backpacking trips. Shoots accurate for me and eats all ammo including crappy tul ammo. Also the DA is important for safety and the decocker, at first hated it, but now have grown to it.

Count me in as another Glock guy saying to go with the RIA 1911. I have never heard one single bad thing about them. My half blind/"slow"/midget uncle can consistently hit 4" steel plates @ 25yds with his RIA 1911 G.I. (true story). See, even a Glock guy can appreciate a 1911...

I don't care for Ruger semi-autos, but they are always reliable. I have no experience with the RIA brand. Given the nature of the 1911, I would suggest going with the Ruger unless your familiar with 1911s in general. I love the old war horse, but it isn't for everyone and wouldn't suggest it to anyone who is new to guns without a little training for safety reasons. If that isn't you, go for the RIA.

Ever since I fired my first 1911, I've been totally in favor of them. Get the 1911!!! :D From what I hear, the RIA that you're looking at is a great choice. You also might wanna consider the Springfield GI or Mil-Spec.
