I was about to pull the trigger on a nice Pelican or SeaHorse when I decided I really didn't have a use for something waterproof to a few feet under that I could also run over with my truck. I'm also quite poor at the moment, so saving like $60-$85 compared to those guys (not to mention it doesn't weigh 8 lbs empty) and getting a $14 Plano Protector XL made too much sense.

I meant to put the .22 upper over the slide of the pistol!!! I didn't realize until after I cut the hole for the pistol that I totally forgot my original plan

So... I wanted to start this thread (I looked, I searched, but didn't find much at all on here) to get some inspiration in the event that I decide to get another foam slab and start over.

Here's what I ended up with -- and I think I'm going to put my speed loader in the empty bottom left region:

Thats nice it looks good, I did that with my first Pelican but found that I wanted to carry different guns at different times and now just go with simple eggcrate foam, everything fits!

I picked mine up at a great sporting goods store in Hayden Lake, Idaho called Black Sheep.

Normally everything I own comes from Sportsman's Guide though :p, and they have the exact same Plano case for the same price: http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=275882

God I wish I had the money and gear worthy for a pelican.

I have a bunch of MTM cases that I bought awhile back when I went through different guns & phases on what I wanted. Now I don't even use them since they're way too bulky in my range bags.

I now just give my pistol cases away since they cost like $5-$10 to begin with and isn't worth selling.

That's an extremely well organized set-up you have there, sir. You need to toss a Maglula in there.

The Pelican 1470 has keyed locking latches, and 2 holes for small padlocks. Built extremely well, and made in the USA. A few different colors available. I got mine in black gently used off eBay for about $60, but they run $100 or so new. Looks like I have room for another mag or two ;-)

Is leaving one square of foam between mags or whatever the reasonable bottom limit?

"Is leaving one square of foam between mags or whatever the reasonable bottom limit?"

I'd say two, or better three squares minimum with the Pelican size pick & pluck. One square between would be too wimpy.

The squares in mine are a bit bigger than in the Pelican. I left one between the widest part of the mags (base plates) and there's 1.5 total between the bodies of the mags (1 full one in the middle and .25 of one on either side of that... look close).

I see no reason to leave any more. The foam is fairly stiff and the mags don't weigh much. You'd have to drop it off a cliff to get them to touch. Even if you squeeze two mags with one square thickness of foam between your hands really hard, you'll compress the foam most of the way but you can't get plastic-to-plastic or metal-to-metal contact. I would have gone even closer if I felt like doing additional cutting.

iron330 -- looks awesome!!! I had decided to go with the 1470 or the similar sized SeaHorse (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=691596) before I cheaped out and grabbed the Plano when I saw it on the shelf in the store. If I ever checked my gun on an airline, I would definitely have gone the nicer route. For now, it's just keeping things organized and scratch-free for going to the range, camping, fun shoots, etc... range bag is too full of ammo to fit a gun and mags anymore ;)

I use an older double layer Dockosill. With two layers depending on how big the pistol are as to how many I can fit in there. At least 4-5.
Some times I'll use a Harbor Freight attache, bore stor my pistols use some foam sheets to keep from sliding about and I can fit quite a bit in that case.
I figure that the case is old not very expensive and maybe they'll steal from someone with a fancy case instead of me. I have a small Pelican and a rifle case Pelican and a couple Alum Diamond Plate rifle cases.
There are a couple of other cases I want to buy eventually.

I used to go with the fancy cases and then thought...why? I use a regular cheap laptop bag and lined it with thin eggcrate foam. Works great.
