Well, I guess it depends on the gun. Regardless of caliber, not many guns can shoot 0.24 MOA at 1000 yrds. ....which is the current record for the 50 bmg.

Grr, I need to get my camera fixed.

Want to post some pics of a rifle I'm building, a Rem 700 in .338 Lapua. I've got the gut's mostly finished (have to finish installing Sako style extractor). But I need to finish inletting the Anschutz style synthetic stock and then bed the rifle.

CZ 750 Sniper
I've seen it on display at Turner's in Pasadena a few weeks ago.

With an effective range of 800 yards, the CZ 750 Sniper is ideal for use by the elite military and law enforcement snipers it was designed for. The synthetic thumbhole sniper style stock is adjustable for comb height as well as length of pull. The underside of the fore-end is fitted with a 220mm long rail that provides multiple attachment points for a bipod.

I really dont considered it a sniper rifle, more of my large game rifle. Its precise at 100yds. Rock Island Arsenal 1903, 30-06. This particular rifle was manufactured in 1934. The only original parts are the reciever, bolt, and trigger asembly, and mag spring.

Do those cases come with the rifles or did you all get them custom made?

They're not custom. Most of these cases come with a solid piece of foam and then you cut the foam to fit your equipment. I know that Pelican also have a service to pre-cut the foam for you at the factory if you have a factory rifle for which they have the dimensions and general shape.

My dad and I bought a Remington 700 in 7mm mag this week. We are trying to pick a scope and rings for it. How do you like your optics?

Nice SPR, but it looks like a Mk12 mod 0.:)

Did you have the upper built or did you do it yourself?

Upsss!!! My mistake... You're right Donger, it should read "MOD 0". "SPR MK-12 MOD-0" (I should stop posting late at night. :o )

Regarding my upper, I actually put it together. It took me almost 8 months to get all the parts (from December 2005 to July 2006). The OPS-INC 12th. series muzzle brake, collar and suppressor was really hard to get!

I am considering building myself one too. I will be going MOD 1 tho, w/ KAC FF handguard.....

20% Give or take...

The receiver as you mention. Plus the original MOD 0 comes with a regular buffer instead of the Enidine Hydraulic Buffer the I have on mine. The pistol grip should be an A2 instead of the SPR. The bolt carrier (original has an M16 BC), NO KNS anti-rotating pins, MI QD Sling Adaptor or adjustable Butt plate.

Stavros, man I have been looking at that upper for a while now. Always wanted to ask if anyone had experience with it. Looks better that the pic on web/cato.

I think they have the kit (minus stipped lower) for just under $1,000. Did you order yours directly from JT or find it for less elsewhere? If so, can you share how much and where. :D

By the way I was thinking of adding the same stock and pistol grip and had no idea scope wise. Nice pics. Nice looking rifle. :)

I ordered just the upper from J&T directly, it was like mid $600s at the time I think. The upper shoots well, sub MOA 10 round groups are common. I just wish I could find somewhere to take it out a bit further. The longest I shot was 350ish to 400 yards, and the funny thing was, it was easier to get smaller MOA groups out further. I was getting like .9-1 inch groups at 100, but then getting 2.5 inch groups at 350. Higher magnification optics definitely helped there.

http://www.andysautosport.com/images/rifle/IMG_8576s.jpg

I went cheap with the scope on this rig, but I was surprised with what I got for $215. I was thinking about upgrading the optic later, but changed my mind. Ill be saving the Leupy Mk4 for the SPR build I am doing next. Here is a rendering of the SPR along with the heavy gun.

Does the muzzle brake really make a difference?

Yes it does, a lot of benefit to a brake.
- Reduction in Recoil
- Quicker Follow Up
- Increased Comfort
- Shoot longer

FWIW: .308 Win by all means can be shoot without a brake & its really personal preference, but my shoulder thanks me & helps me focus on shooting/less fatigue from long hours of shooting. Especially nice shooting standing, & sitting w/ follow up shots.

- w/ VAIS Brake you can remove it & thread on a muzzle cap without worrying of your brake timing changing from removal/install from cleaning.
- Also the multi port across the brake really is very effective, also w/ the VAIS its on par with a non-braked .308, a side port brake on the other hand is a lot more nosier

that savage looks really good....Did you paint the stock yourself? If so with what?

ocabj
06-20-2007, 8:34 PM
Yes, I painted it myself using Brownells Alumahyde II. It didn't come out like I wanted. I put the desert tan first and then the olive drab. The resulting scheme I wanted actually required me to put the OD first, then the desert tan with the stencils in place. I should have used reverse logic (light then dark, instead of dark then light). Oh well. I can always repaint it.

Check out http://catalog.bulldogarms.com/ They have all kinds of stencils for about 10 bucks. Alumahyde comes in a spray can and is easy to use. Try it, its fun!

Next time I'll use some of those professional stencils instead of my own feeble attempt:

That group was right at 2 inches edge to edge.

Uncorrected, my eyesight is pretty bad. I actually had cataract surgery back in 2002 so I have a synthetic lens in my right eye. That means the vision in my right eye (dominant eye) is "fixed focus" and I have to wear bi/tri-focals or progressive (I use progressive) in order to see far and near.

lol. I really want a scope with those. I was going to place a Leupold Mark 4 M1 6-20x40mm scope on it but decided that would be way overkill for a .223. I like the look and features of the SWFA super sniper, however, I'll never own one due to their warranty policy. I'm planning on swapping out the VX-1 for a VX-II 6-18x40 AO target model with the target turrets. That is the ideal scope for a .223 precsion rifle. It has all the features of the SS at under $450 and has the Leupy no qs asked warranty.

Thats what is so great about leupold. You can order one with that reticle or any other reticle you desire for around $100. That only puts me slighty over the SWFA SS budget while still giving me Leupy performance.

I'm sorry if I heard wrong. I've heard they let you hang after a year of ownership and only cover manufacturers defects rather than accidents, fire damage, ect....

Either way I still prefer the Leupy model I've found. I'll get it when I find longer range locations to shoot at. For now, the VX-1 works fine for 100 yards. I used to have the stoney point target turrents but they work horribly on friction adjust scopes.

Not legally, at least... This would be a "smuggle back" and questionable claim, plus considering that it's US Govt Property (unless it was also "smuggled in") "Bring back" is a trophy weapon (not since Vietnam War), not something out of your own armory (not since Korean War). I knew of a guy who brought his own G3 into Op:Desert Storm - smuggled in and out in parts by him and his buddies - his luck that his CO opted to look another way.

I don't know all ins and outs, but the original poster should either state the legitimacy of their claim or not make statements that can be misconstrued as stolen property. (once again, I could be wrong but questions come up). I hear from SOF and EOD personel in Iraq that they blow up countless weapons on the daily basis - the kind that would bring some serious mint on the Civilian Market...

If someone makes a statement and it's fishy - it's my right to question it... If anything, it's necessary to post that the given item is 100% within the law - especially if it can be misconstrued as such.

You are correct in questioning the post... I would also like the questions to be answered..

It is known that this board is watched and posting illegal weapons is a COC violation and not needed here..

Why would the .Mil use a M1a vs. the current line of M14's they are issuing?

I don't mean to attack you or your service but you will need to explain your post. Please..

Although I wouldn't consider this a precision rig, it shoots like one.

A build for my girlfriend, she promised not to paint it pink. This is her gateway into firearms, and is purely a range toy so don't mind the cheap glass.

J&T Lightweight tactical 1/9 fluted 16" HBAR
FF Forearm (I dont see her needing to hang anything off this rifle anytime soon)
RRA NM Trigger (definitely needed to help squeeze those groups together)
Hogue grip + Magpul CTR
Cheapie optics and mount (she can go buy her own nice glass!)

Despite being 1/9 it will stabilize 77gr SMKs from my handloads. It shoots hovering at about 1 MOA to 350yds with them.

I ordered it off Gunbrokers about a month ago.

Gunrunners in Duarte received the barreled action, and I received everything else (stock, parts, accessories) directly. I got a BB from Cold War Shooters and installed it - there's no way in hell I'm filling in the thumbhole stock.

Prc329

Savage 10fp

Pros - Very accurate out of the box.
Good trigger
Most of the smithing work can be done with no special tools

Here somes the cons. Not these cons may not apply to everyone but the do apply to my style of shooting and situation.

Con - No detachable mag system currently available except the factory new 10FCP. I have heard second hand accounts of the mag system not being good but I have never tried it personally

Aftermarket is there but not a wide variety to tailor to you.
Bolt is a little loose, meaning it is a little floppy. This is not a con for some but I didn't like it.
Factory stock is utter garbage

Remingto 700 SPS

Pro - Good out of the box rifle but not as accurrate as the savage due to an even crappier stock
Can be had cheaper then the 10FP
Many options available for DM system
Fits an AICS stock (my main reason for buying it)

con - This is the only real con because the second con is kind of a person taste thing.

The factory stock and trigger are garbage. The factory trigger can be fixed but is not supposed to be user adjustable. I suspect this is the reason for the accuracy being not as good out of the box as the savage. The stock touches the barrel even more then the savage factory stock will.

Gunsmith needed for most of the stuff you can do on a savage in your garage.

The second con is really a matter of the individual. Some may not care about being able to change barrels with some basic tools and would rather have a gunsmith do the work. I have heard reports of the SPS being a sub MOA gun and being dropped into a PSS stock and becoming less the, .5 moa guns. Mine was never shot without the AICS stock and brake. It is now a sub .5 gun.

My 2 pennies...

I rarely send a guy out, (myself included) with an OEM rifle... nothing remains stock. Ya gotta hot rod the stuff a little.

Savage- Longer ejection/loading port, by about 1/2 inch over the remy.. Makes loading and unloading in the even of a failure to eject much easier.

Rem- wider screw spacing- better for stability in the stock.

Sav- if you keep the factory barrel nut, the base or root section of the bbl must be rather slim- 1.050 to be exact. The rem comes this way, the Sav can be built this way, as I always do.

Aftermarket triggers- sav has the rifle basix and the sharpshooter for about 100 bucks. To get the remy trigger to be nice, you just gotta turn some screws- that's free.

Sav- offers rh/rh, rh/lh, lh/lh, and lh/rh operation with various models. Rem- RR, LL only.

Sav- if you plan on leaving it as is, the sav barrel will usually shoot straighter.

The sav can be mod'd into any caliber you want in the future.

Stocks- there'e real good stuff available for both. The AICS is a better money-making campaign than a useful rifle stock I think. Mcmillan and HS are hard to beat.

extras- reputable companies all make good scope mounts for both- so it's a tossup there.

rem- factory warranty sucks arsh. Try getting Rem to fix the bolt handle WHEN it pops off or replace the extractor when it bends out of shape. Then you gotta speak spanish cause the phone lady at the factory warranty repair place don't speak anything else.

Savage- if it breaks- midway and brownells just sell all the parts you need.

The AICS is in my opinion the best stock system out. Notice I said system. The beauty of the AICS is no need to buy DBM or have the gun bedded. It also is a very well designed stock. It fits me very well and just feels damn good. The detachable mag is probably the best there is. It works better then my AR15 mag system in my opinion. The damn thing just works in the almost 300 rounds I have put threw my gun I have not had any feeding issues. Period. In any of my 2 5 rounders or my 2 10 rounders. I seat my rounds to 2.84.

I had the privilege of shooting McMillan and HS stocks. The McMillian I shot was on a Remmy and I believe it was an A3. The HS was on a Savage and the factory HS on the 700P. They all felt nice and worked well but just didn't feel right to me. Then there is the cost of bedding a rifle properly and the cost of the DBM on the remmy and you are at the price of an AICS 1.5 or more. Everyone that has shot or held my rifle loves that stock.

Sure-it's quite charming. I'm finishing up a 338 for myself right now-I kinda spun the ferret idea a little. It's a tube gun, with a PG, but I bull-pupped the design- to save length. Everyone's gotta have a 338.

the thing on the AICS is the grip- it's too low, dones not allow a sj=hooter of any size to get his hand where it should be. It kinda forces the web of your hand too low. Does not allow your hand to get behind the rifle- it leaves it at the side. The principle is sound, yes, not perfectly executed though.

Fair enough. I personally like the way the grip is. And once you adjust the LOP and the cheek weld it just felt natural to me.

i have two major complaints with my hs stock. (1) no adjustable cheek piece (2) recoil pad is too short, and should be a little longer. i have these two complaints due to my badger high rings, and i have a slight discomfort placing the butt snugly on my shoulder in a low prone position due to my long limbs.

If I may ask a few questions:
1. What specific B&C stock is that?

It's a plain jane Duramaxx stock in black. I got dealer pricing on it (C&R). Here's the link. http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=195644&t=22164010

2. What scope is that?

It's a Barska swat scope 3.5-10x40, it's still holding up after 1000 rounds, so no complaints about that. The glass is clear from 3.5-7, after that it goes downhill from there, I always use 3.5 to 5 anyway.

Wilshier, she is a beauty. Karsten did the stock?

Oh and here is what the final rifle will look like. I plan on getting my Mike Rock installed on it after the beginning of the year so the only thing that will be diff is the recoil lug, barrel and muzzle brake.

Damn, that looks wicked. Very nice job. I like the camo pattern. Are you putting on a Badger recoil lug when you get the barrel?

US Optics SN-3 1.8-10x44 with US Optics mount/ARMS #18 base.

That's a slick scope... I had one with fixed objective... It's really the only scope that will serve for CQ and 1,000 yd shooting. LUUUV the EREK elevation turret. Traded it in on the old stand by Loopy MKIV TMR 4-14x40

Did you get it from CSgunworks in Elk Grove?

Yeah and an FTE brake. They are sitting on my reloading bench waiting for the barrel.

hey hey, be nice. this is his first rifle.

on a side note, I was at a local Turner's last week. They were trying to sell a "custom" 700 for 2k. It was a Remington 700P with the barrel recut to 20inches. It sported a bottom end Leupold with some crappy rings and mount. It did have a badger bolt mod or at least it looked like badger, and a benchrest haris bipod. I told the guy behind the counter that it was false advertisment, and they stuck to the story that it was custom. I asked if the action was at least trued, and he said, "it had a custom barrel job" on it. BS!

Compared to what I saw last week, this green m40 wannabe rifle is much better.

It could be worse . . . it could be (God forbid) all black . . . the sign of a true tacticool virgin

By the way nice looking rig . . . did you rebarrel and/or true the action and reset the stock barrel?.

hey, i like all black. my next build is going all black too. keep it clean and simple. plus painting your scope decreases the value of the scope.

That's why my scope is still a virgin, at least one of them anyway. I was thinking of camoing Savannah in different shades of pastel though for next season . . . sometimes I get tired of OD, Sand, Coyote Brown, and Black . . .

The barrel and action are the two original parts on the gun, but they have been trued. The guy that owned it was a USMC sniper that used it to shoot in the long-range matches. I picked it up as-is for a great deal; with all of the top-end parts on it I wasn't arguing. The stock was $1050 from McMillan, that MK4 is a $1200-1600 piece depending on where you buy it, and the base/rings are in the $300-350 neighborhood. That's not including the time involved in the build and the little extras. For the price I paid I'll take it any day of the week.....

Hehe.... my wife wishes this was my first rifle. This is one of a dozen or so.

I'm not worried about CRT's opinion anyway... especially when the link is to something he wrote. Sorry CRT, not all of us can go through life making things up on the internet and then using them for reference in forums. One of these days you'll get a real job instead of that aspiring internet writer thing you try to do. Have you considered gay porn? How about trying out to be the next tub girl.... only you could use Red Bull instead of orange juice..... yeah......

i think someone got offended. no need to get upset. if you can outshoot the next to you with that rifle, more power to you.

just remember people will critic your rifle if you go camo, and especially if it resembles an m40a1. the m40a1 has a high reputation to hold up to, that's all. shiny things on a real sniper weapon won't look legitimate to people.

For the record.... I was J/K with CRT.... He knows me well enough to take that completely in jest....

As for the rifle.... I didn't set it up; it came as-is. I wasn't going to argue with the goods as they're top quality and I would have had to spend $3k+ to put it together otherwise.

I'm not sure how well I can shoot it as of yet... a little range time past 100 yards is in order before I make that decision. The guy I got it from was able to shoot groups in the 5" range at 1000 yards, so I know the rifle will do it. Me? That's a good question..... :D

As far as others critiquing the rifle because it resembles an M40a1.... don't really care.... It is what it is and I'm not going to toss a $1k McMillan stock so it doesn't resemble something or other..... Would you? ;)
