Just bought a new Buckmark, picked up some Winchester ammo. at Big 5 [ 500 rds. 18$ and change] was not to impressed, seemed like every ten shot Mag. had one or two misfires. Ran a box of 50 CCIs, shot like a dream.

Just wanted to know what to look for and what to stay alway from.

Sorry if this threads been done a thousand times, I'm new to this caliber and reload every thing else. Thanks for the help Tim

Ok, well like anything else in life

What is cheap to you?
What are you wanting the round to? (hunting, plink, target)

I stay away from Remington at all cost. You can get good ammo from CCI or Federal.
I usually get the Federal 550 pack at walmart for around $20.

For general plinking I really like Federal Champion, which is usually found in 525 and 550 bulk packs for around $18.00 a box.

Cabelas has a 375 round box on sale for $9.99.

That's pretty much what I was going to say, except to also mention that the cheap Winchester .22 ammo is awful. I've actually seen it have a squib round (bullet had to be tapped out of the barrel, etc.)

The Blazer is pretty good if you can find it in bulk. Up here its $15.99 for 500 rounds. Great for plinking.

Target, just like to put some tight groups togeather at 25 yards, two or three times a month.

Sounds like stay away from Winchester and Remington, 18- 25$ for 500 rds. is going rate.
Looks like I'll be making the haul down to Santa Clara [wally world] again.

Thanks Guys Tim

Federal has treated me much better than Winchester or Remington gold bullet. That said, I have gotten a few FTFire rounds with Federal. Choose your poison, but Federal hasn't ever failed to feed in any of my .22lr guns.

If your going for accuracy, any bulk pack ammo is going to be dissapointing. You will want target ammo, and the cheapest, yet very highly rated, is Wolf Match Target. Don't let the Wolf name scare you, it is german made ammo by Lapua. About $5 a box of 50, cheaper in bulk. In all 4 of my .22's, the Wolf groups half the size of Federal bulk pack.Target, just like to put some tight groups togeather at 25 yards, two or three times a month.

Cheap, the HV remmington golden bullet(not the regular stuff, thats ****) or Federal bulk, I stay away from winchester since my 22/45 seems to hate it(every other round misfeeds)

For target ammo, Wolf match, I have also had good luck with CCI

Timmmm,

You can always expect some misfires in almost any brand of 22 LR's. So in that being said don't worry about it. Besides that your pistol mechanism is also breaking in so take that into acccount as well for the first 500 rounds.

Like you found out CCI ran well for you and it's my prefered brand in the Blazer brand. Usually I don't like the copper plated bullets anyway. Part f the fun is trying different brands and keeping a log can help you in the future.

where did you get blazers for 15.99? that's a great price. I think i saw them on sale at big 5 this weekend for $19.

In my experience with factory ammo you find the ammo your gun shoots best and go from there.

I prefer CCI Mini-Mags, 40 grain, high velocity...why? because it's what my guns shoot best...

CCI anything is better for accuracy.
The bulk packs are good for plinking. I always wonder about the bulk packs. Winchester I have bought in this area works great. Federal bulk sucks. But in CA it seems to be the opposite.
I've noticed a difference in different parts of the country. The guy I test with has the same results with Federal in FL. Sucks.
Guys farther west seem to have good results.
Go figure.

No one has mentioned the Eley. If you don't mind shooting 40 gr. LRN, that's a quality round at a reasonable price.

also, experiment by buying a small box in every brand/model. For whatever reason, rimfire guns are very finicky. So just bc it works for one person, it may not work for you.

Yeah... The only ammo that doesn't work well with my .22LR AR-15 is the CCI Minimags...

Everything else runs well... Blazer bulk, Federal, American Eagle, Remington GB's, lol... Everything...

Yea.
Good call on buying small amounts, trying to think of something to tell the guy at Big 5 about his lousy ammo. and could he give me a credit on the unopen box.

Thanks for all the grest info. tim

Federal American Eagle Copper Plated Hollow Points High Velocity is awesome! Shoots clean, no FTF's, about $22.00 for a brick of 400, comes in 10 individual boxes of 40. Great stuff!

For plinking on my Buckmark and 10/22's I use either CCI minimags or Federal AutoMatch bulk ammo. The normal Federal bulk I leave alone. I reuse the CCI containers to load up my Federal AutoMatch ammo into.

**Edit**

I get the CCI Minimags for $7ish and the Federal AutoMatch for $14ish from Walmart.

I can vouch for CCI AR Tactical 40gr. copper plated round nose. Shot a box of 375 and experienced only one jam (maybe friend loaded the magazine incorrectly?). My S&W M&P 15-22 loves this stuff and I do too. Not the cheapest .22 bulk ammo though & not the easiest to find too. It's ball ammo too so it's good to go at any range.

i have real good succes with federal automatch just shot 500 or so rounds thru 10//22 and 22/45 mkiii ,with only 2 ftf on 22/45 good stuff.been staying away from whinchester and remingtion very dirty ammo, just found whinchester m-22 ammo for target and plinking ,looks like good quality made for modern sporting rifles hopefully pistols too,all purchashed at wallyworld federal 325 rnds bout 14 bucks, whinchester m-22 1000 rnds for 45 bucks ,cant go wrong with any cci ammo

Remington was the worst. My federal bulk pack functions great from milwal for around $15/525

Blazer and winchester are good, but that federal I've gone through a couple boxes with no ftf or any problems.

Cci minimag grouped tighter in my recent testing. Good stuff.

I am a big believer in the Blazer bulk ammo. 500 round brick for $16 at river city gun in Sacramento. Big 5 has them for $19. I get really good groups with my 10/22. I tried the Winchester 333 and 555 packed and had some duds.

Just to be fair, the Remington Sub Sonics function quite well in my semi-autos.

californa,

I too like Blazer ammo from CCI. Basically it's nothing more than the higher priced Mini-Mag but with without the copper coating. I like it cuz when I shoot for groups it's my ammo I use as a base-line when graphing on paper.

Blazers and Federal Walmart bulk are both pretty good. Often found for under 4 cents a round in various sales. I shot rifleman with federal bulk on my Sig 522

As you read through other posts here you will see a lot only talk about functionality, some about accuracy. What kind of accuracy at what range will you be satisfied with? All bulk ammo will have some ftf, fte and failure to fire at some point. Cheap ammo is exactly that and is great for plinking but if you want small groups at say 25 yds with a pistol then bulk ammo will probably not get it for you.

For best accuracy expect to pay at least $5/50 for something like Wolf Match Target. There is a reason that ammo is priced where it is. I have spent a ton of money trying to find the cheap ammo that will shot in my 6 22lr firearms. Never found it. But Wolf Match Target shoots small groups in all of them and even better with Lapua Center-X @ $10/50.

Sure I've had a few tight groups from ammo such as Federal AutoMatch, Aguila Match Target, Aguila Match Rifle, American Eagle, Federal Lightning, Centurion but at some point I always get a flyer or two out of five which is not dependable enough for real accuracy to suit me.

It all boils down to what accuracy you are willing to accept. I can get 3/4"-1/2" groups at 50yds sometimes with bulk ammo but for me it has to shoot less than 1/2" @ 50 yds or I won't call it accurate, but then that's just me and not a steadfast rule for all. All my guns save one are bolt action.

This.
It shows up as a box full of 50 rnd boxes, but I just dump everything into a tupperware container. They are pretty consistent, very low rate of duds, and everything I own will cycle the stuff without any issues.

Keep in mind some guns are sensitive to high velocity ammo vs. standard velocity. Especially my Phoenix Arms HP22. :) So far it's favorite has been Fiocchi which I picked up at sports authority for $.97/50 rounds not too long ago.
