I didn't read the whole thread, but how is it free?
No need for tags and/or no need for weekend or annual fee?

Ok, well it is free as in no charge excep the 25 dollars for your FHL pass for the weekend. You have to however posses a Ca Fish and Game license and pig tag if you wish to hunt pigs...

Do they allow the use of shotgun slugs to take pigs? I wasn't expecting to need my rifle this soon and I recently put a new scope on it that isn't sighted in. If I can just foster-type slugs I'm game.

I don't believe they have any restrictions on the use of shotgun / slugs. When open, Area's 29 and 30 (if I remember correctly) is shotgun and archery only. All other areas are good for general hunting.
1hunter - when you said it was free, I thought they were waving the fee's and the need for pig tags... FHL has tons of pigs, but they know to hang out in closed off areas or private property, LOL.

FHL is nice with game but just be careful, tons of wannabe hunters out there (aka 'hunters safety? whats that?). The bow, muzzle loaders, and slug shooters are usually the most successful ~ probably since less yahoo's are there and it's restricted to said gear.

I have yet to figure out why anyone ever uses anything other than slugs, muzzle-loaders, and archery to take pigs. Although I have sometimes used a .308 or .30-06 to take pigs I've always preffered slugs and lever guns.
