My command (Navy) had an invited guest CHP officer who told us guns could be in plain view as long as unloaded not encased/locked. He did say it was not advisable but legal under the open carry law

Just like walking around "open carry" the problem is the minefield of the unmarked Victim Disarmament Zones.

This. You gotta be very aware of ALL of the GFSZs where you are driving. If you're in ANY city you can get screwed by those quickly.

If you want to UOC, it is legal. Handguns can't be concealed. All guns can't be loaded. As the others have said, it is the Gun Free School Zone laws that trip people up.

You don't have to be in ANY city for the GFSZ to reach out and bite you. There are schools outside city limits too, and they are just as well hidden as those in the cities.
