I'm embarrassed, I didn't take any notice or photos while out in the field, but there were some birds I disturbed all over the place that made a crazy racket when flying to the next bush over. Like they were way to heavy for their wing size and had to create a LOT of turbulent air just to keep on the air.

Is that the sound chukars make when flying? or are they more graceful/harder to find? I'm not much of a waterfowl hunter but I wouldn't mind trying my hand at some upland birds....

Definitely not quail, these were far larger. I've definitely seen and heard and interacted with quail in the field before.

Where did you see them at, this will help determine what they may be.

definitely an ostrich.

Ostriches are decimating the toad population of our best toad units.

Awesome. Exactly what I was hearing. Doesn't sound like any other typical city bird, does it. I have something to do come October. :)

Mountain quail get pretty big and sound like what you're describing when they take off

You can sometimes walk right up to those sob. Scares the daylight out of me when I don't expect one. They'll just flap their wings as hard as they can and bolt right out, low to the ground till they can get some speed. Sometimes them sobs will bolt out right at ya.

Once I stumbled upon a mass of them near some bushes, One took off and they all took off. quails on roids i tell ya

P.S. Remember to look at what you're shoot before taking your shot, it just MIGHT and CAN also be a big quail too, or pheasant. Get'her done.
