Hope someone can give me some insight on this:

Is there any reason why it would be illegal to permanently modify an original 10 round magazine to be a 5 round magazine?

I can't find anything on it, so I think its ok, but then again, this is Kalifornia, so i thought I'd check with the experts here.

Any legally informed answers would be really appreciated!
Thanks!

I can't think of anything wrong with that, so far as PC goes.

Nope. You're fine.

Out of curiosity, why do you want to make a 5-round magazine?

Thanks for your answers guys! I feel better knowing that I am not a felon :-). Why I did it? Because I can :-) No, eeeh, I don't want to go into it too much (off topic in this legal section) but here is why:

I am preparing to do a "Big WASR Ammo Accuracy Test" which requires the WASR to be strapped down in a machine rest (Hyskore Dangerous Game). This machine rest is designed for hunting rifles (I need to modify it for length as well) so it does not have much clearance underneath the gun. I bought some 10 round Tapco Intrafuse mags, but although they fit with the gun strapped down, I can not angle them enough to get them in/out. So i needed a subcompact body. What Tapco (and others) sell as a 5rounder is mostly a 10rounder body with an extended follower... Since I already had the 10 rounders I decided to go for it. I am making a tutorial how to do it which I'll post in the gunsmithing section, but here are a few pics of my handywork. The reworked mag is tiny, fits 5 rounds, and can be removed with the gun strapped down. I was pretty happy with my handywork... :-).
Both pictures show the unmodified mag vs the modified one.
Anyway, you asked :-)

Thanks again for the reassurances!

Nice! Sounds cool.

Post the results of your test when you're done (in the rifles forum that is).

Again, thanks for the legal guidance!
Project is done and documented. I have posted a before and after photo in the gunsmithing forum, so you can reply there to make fun of my handywork :-)
