I had an old M1/M2 walnut repro carbine stock and handguard I've had for twenty years sitting around doing nothing. I've seen ads for M1 stocks that are made to fit on 10/22 rifles, so I thought I would spare the expense and fit this stock to my 10/22. I ordered a buttplate, repro type 2 barrel band, barrel band retainer, plastic repro recoil plate, plate screw, buttplate screw, and factory ruger stock screw and escutcheon. I fitted the receiver by taking out wood where it was to tight and adding wood for places such as the receiver support rails and inside areas where I needed to make sure there wouldn't be a problem with pins walking out during firing. I used epoxy for all that work including a new barrel block to mount the barrel/receiver unit. Since I had Tech Sights on it already I took off the fold down rear sight in order to fit the handguard. I used a 4-40 brass machine screw I had laying around and drilled out one of the four existing rear rivets that hold the rear of the handguard metal in place that usually goes into a slot in the receiver of a real M1 carbine. I fitted everything together and assembled it so I could sand the stock/handguard unit to make sure the sides were even and everthing mated up nice and snug, especially the handguard. I made the faux slide rail out of a strip of hobby spruce, glass resined it and painted it to look like parkerizing. I used seven coats of Tru Oil on the wood while steel wooling between coats to fill the grain followed up by Stock Sheen and wax. I used this rifle before the conversion in the July rimfire match at Raaughes, and seeing all the new look-a-like 22's that are on the market now, I thought it would be a neat project to endeavor in. It looks more authentic than the stock and barrel band combos that are available on-line for these rifles now,and I'll order a repro sling and oiler for it soon. I also added a Volquartzen hammer and bolt release combo in addition to a new extractor and extended mag release from the same company.
