picked up a gently used 10/22 that has the holes drilled for the scope. My question is what type of rings do I use?

If you are planning to install a rail than get scope rings that works for weaver rail.
The rings I used is Leupold Rifleman Rifle Scope Mount Rings.

No such thing as scope rings screwed on top of 10/22. You have to use a mount either full rail or split rail.
Or scope ring that can be attached directly on top of the receivers ridge.

This is what I have on my 10/22. Its cheap and does the job just fine for me. It also comes with the rings that will fit a Ruger sight rail

OK, stupid question, what are the pre drilled holes for on the Ruger?

For a rail mount!
All of them comes with pre-drilled holes like my Marlin came with it .....it is standard.

You can also use all in one mount and scope rings:

They give you that option.... either direct mount on the ridge of the receiver or you can install a different mount.
That is why it has holes.

the rail gives u flexibility if you have eye relief issues, meaning you can use a one piece ring mount that pushes the scope forward an inch of so.
for a scope i would suggest a 1-4x or 2-7x most brands work great since it will go on a 22lr rifle.

Turners was out of the Simmons rimfire. Found this one at Wlamart for $29.00. Would this one do for Appleseed?

Another option is Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=simmons+22mag+scope&x=0&y=0

I picked up my simmons 22mag scope off of it for like $42.00. Took about 4 days to get it and came with the rings.

It'll be just fine.

If you later feel like burning some more money, my favorite mid-priced scope is the Weaver 4x (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=174349), but the Bushnell will be plenty. I wouldn't buy more scope until using that one for a while and figuring out what you want out of a scope.

Also try out the Redfield Scope line. Made in the US, reasonably priced, great eye relief, and outstanding fog resistance. Scored rifleman in the middle of the rain and cold with my Redfield 3-9x40mm with Accu Reticule, which sells for $160.

Since his Appleseed was in September, and it's October now, I imagine he's not still looking. :-)

But for anybody else wondering the same thing - I can second the suggestion of the Weaver 4X. I got one for my wife and it's just about perfect for Appleseed.

I picked a Sightron 3x9 rimfire. The shootboss at the appleseed recommended it. I am waiting for the mount and will probably try it out this weekend if anybody wants to know how well it goes
